I've narrowed down the drives that I'm considering for an upgrade to a Sony VAIO VGN BX760 laptop. Amazon's current prices are as follows:
Western Digital 320 GB Scorpio Black - $72.44
Western Digital 640 GB Scorpio Blue - $79.99
The benefits of the Blue are additional size; the benefits of the Black is speed. Are there other benefits if installed in the BX-760 of either one (and I'm assuming that both will function in this laptop...please correct me if I'm wrong!)?
Also, I've never swapped drives and I have no idea how to do it however I'm going to purchase an external drive enclosure and thought that I would first use it with the new drive, copy the existing drive, remove/replace and the computer would boot up. Am I being to simplistic (and optimistic) and if so, what is the procedure to properly replace a disc drive?
Many thanks in advance!
David

That should work just fine. As long as you use a drive image program it should be as simple as you describe. What drive image program do you intend to use?
-
What is a drive image program???
Any and all suggestions (as well as your previous feedback) is appreciated!!! -
In a nutshell - program that images (clones) a drive.
Like Acronis or Norton Ghost. There are also free ones out there. Just google.

Take the best from both worlds (capacity & speed) = Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 500GB 7200rpm
(the forum's favorite so far
)

LOL...I knew that I could count on you guys to help me spend more money
That said, the 7K500 is in my cart
-
Good choice, Hitachi 7k500 is the fastest notebook hard drive currently available.

7K500! Get it! Its the best.. can't wait for mine.. once i can find a cheap 500GB version in UK..

Don't image the old drive. Do a clean install. Best way to clean the registry = delete.
-
I'm not opposed to this however I don't have the OS (XP SP3) on disc and I've got no idea how to boot up a new disc...
-
Ah, I really hate this trend.
Well, there is nothing special to booting a new hard drive: install new hard drive, place OS disc in tray and boot. Might have to go into bios (usually press F2 at boot) and change the boot order to DVD Rom --> Drive C ---> etc.
In your situation a cloned drive may be better.
But, you could try e-mailing Sony's tech support. OR you could take this opportunity to upgrade your OS. If you buy the hard drive or any computer component you also can grab an OEM Windows 7 disk pretty cheaply. NewEgg.com or ZipZoomFly.com would be good places to check out for OEM copies. -
Thanks for the feedback and yes, I realize that if I had the OS disk all would be simple but I've got no desire to upgrade the OS so perhaps MS will be able to sell me a disk for my license or I will just clone my existing drive.

I agree with the fresh install.
But if OP wants to image the drive then use Drive Image XML

Free and simple to use drive image program. -
I say clean install... its isn't bad to image but a clean install helps.. i always keep an image of old drive on external as my data stays on the image.
