I'm thinking of getting one of these but was wondering if it's worth saving a few bucks getting the essential (USB only) or get the premium (USB, Firewire 400) or the pro (USB, Firewire 400 & 800)

Is there a big difference between those 3 interface?

I would mainly use the hard drive for photos and music backup....

anyone had experience with the product?

btw, I'm planning on getting the 500gb

suggestions for a good alternative would be great too...

I have a 250GB My Book "Essential" (the one with the green light and USB 2.0 only), and I like it a lot. Its very small and sleek, but it really isn't that quiet, you can really tell when its running. And I dislike the AC adapter, but thats not something that can be helped, since its not a mobile external hard drive.

All in all though, I like it very much.

do u have firewire 800 in your system? firewire 400 is in theory just as fast as USB 2.0 but in practice will be faster, so 800 will be even faster than that. But if you are just backing stuff up and aren't concerned about speed, then go for the USB only. I have that and it's quite good but the nice thing about the premium and pro is that the power indicator also has a storage indicator ring which fills up as you fill up the space. Overall, nice, reasonably quick and stylish enclosures.

I do have firewire 800 in my system...

i really want to get the pro but it's about $70 more... for the 500gb...

i'm thinking if it's going to be worth money in the long run too
