Which one is better in terms of reliability/power consumption/transfer rates/temperature? Overall? Noise?

    Do you own both drives?
Your signature states you have the WD800BEVS.
The WD800BEVS is a 80gb 5400rpm drive by WD, included in the Blue series. The Blue series of drives are newer, than the older 5400.2 series drives, which generally means they are faster, quieter and more power efficient.
In this case, the WD has one 80gb platter while the 5400.2 has 2 platters. This right off the bat means that the WD has a higher data density, and a lower noise output. Two platter drives generate more noise than a single platter drive.
For temperature, I would say the WD has the advantage, cause of its single platter nature.

For an upgrade, you should look at the latest generation 7200rpm drives from WD, Hitachi, Seagate or Fujitsu. They will make your speedy 5400rpm wd look like a slow poke

Thank you very much K-TRON that's what I was hoping to hear.

I'd like to upgrade to a 5400RPM 320GB drive, maybe will do next year. It's more difficult getting one of those when I don't live in the US.

Anyways, I'm keeping my WD800, it seems a very reliable drive.

upgrading to a 320gb 5400rpm drive will still show a nice performance increase over your current drive. Only because the 320gb drive actually uses the entire platter, whereas the 80gb wd blue may only use part of one platter, to give the 80gb data, or just one side of a 160gb platter.

Thanks K-tron for your useful response. I'm looking at some 320GB drives at eBay. I will pull the trigger on one of the WD 320G model. It seems that WDC are also reliable, I though only Hitachi were the ones to trust, but I haven't had any kind of trouble with my Blue 80GB.

    Thank

    for the 320gb 5400rpm series.
The hitachi 5k320 is the quietest, the western digital and teh samsung are tie for second place in performance, while the wd is supposedly a bit quieter than the samsung.
All are great drives, but the fujitsu 320gb 5400rpm drive is the fastest of them.

I would personally go with the hitachi, but if you have good things with wd, than go with them.
They should be pretty cheap, so look for them new at ewiz, zipzoomfly or newegg. Usually they have rebates and such bringing the price down to $60-80, which is a really good deal.
