WESTERN DIGITAL TO ACQUIRE HITACHI GLOBAL STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES

Personally im sad, with recent issues i had with WD in both laptops and desktop, i tried to stay away, and found hitachi to be my favorite drives on laptops, now it seems that im going back again to WD with this acquisition, maybe samsung will be my choice of the future.

I too like Hitachi hdd`s and hope this deal falls though, the more hdd manufactures the better to keep the price down and the quality up.

$"%%!" happens. I read this, this morning as well and was sort of sad because I think it's good to have more competing companies. I hope this doesn't turn out to be as bad as when Oracle bought Adobe, or was it when Adobe bought Macromedia.. oh well they were both bad decisions.

I don't think that is true. Two - Three large companies competing can work very well. Samsung, WD and Seagate are the big 3 for HDDs and for SSDs there are a whole lot of small companies and some big ones like Intel, Samsung. I don't think this will matter at all for competition. I expect there will be a niche market for SSDs for a while longer and then the big companies will dominate and there will be more mergers/takeovers.

You need huge scale to bring down prices and you need huge scale so that you can supply OEM components for the computer/notebook manufacturers. Only way to survive.

Hard Drive manufacturers are competing for a shrinking slice of the storage market. SSDs already kick their butts in terms of performance. The only advantages that mechanical HDDs have are price and capacity. And that will quickly evaporate, whenever SSDs become cheaper and larger capacity.

In 5 years, I'd be surprised if we saw any mechanical HDDs being sold as new parts. 5 years is an eternity when we are talking about evolving computer technology, but isn't very long at all when we are talking about businesses.

This merger makes absolute sense to me. It is a case of adapt-or-perish, and merging Western Digital + Hitachi is like two members of an endangered species sticking together to increase their chances of survival.

    Mating! Yuk! :D

I would like them to stay separate but must agree it might be a necessary move.

Hitachi has an enterprise SSD line ;) A well known and used one.

WD needed to buy someone with a healthy dose of SSD tech and market to stay in the market.

Oracle brought SUN Microsystems. Adobe is still themselves, but they did buy Macromedia. SUN was on a brink of extinction though financially. Oracle kinda saved them by giving them life support of more cash flow to work with.

I like WD, I have yet had any problems with them, even though I do realize that WD's QC hasn't been up to snuff over the recent years.

I think it's so they can acquire manufacturing plants, as they cost several billions and years to build. I've never had a WD personally die on me, and I will continue to recommend them. Though this may drive up the price of OEM drives as Hitachi is a huge OEM supplier..
