Hi, I recently recieved my Sisters old westinghouse laptop. I know it has been hit or miss with this computer but so far we have had over 2 years with no problems. Since this comp is free I was going to play around with it and see what cheap upgrades I can do, I see many ppl have upgraded the CPU to the Core Duo. I have a few questions for those who have.

Will any of the core 2 duo processors work or is there only specific ones?
I currently have 2gb of 533mhz ram, will I need to upgrade that to 667 as well?

I know it currently has the celeron M processor, I know I can upgrade from the 410 1.46ghz to a 430 1.73, but how about something like the 550 at 2ghz? will there be a noticeable difference?

If I stay with the celeron M family can I upgrade to 667mhz RAM? is that much faster than the 533?

Right now on ebay Celeron M processors are going for like $15 so if I can add a little more speed for a few $$ I would love to

Please give me a few details if you respond, I know some about computers and feel comfortable upgrading them, but the language changes so fast that throwing out numbers and speeds wont really help me. This computer is mainly used for internet and microsoft office type work.

    Thank You

    welcome to notebook review,

Your questions can be answered very easily if you provide us with one more piece of information, the chipset.
Please download and install cpu-z on your laptop.
Run the program and go into the motherboard tab.
Please tell us what chipset your system uses

    It should be i940, i943, or i945

If its a i940 you will be stuck with core duo or core solo processors
If you have a i945 you will be able to upgrade to a core 2 duo processor.

You do not want to upgrade to a celeron m, they are very slow and generate a lot of heat. Celerons do not have speedstep technology, so they are always running at their maximum clock speed.
core solo, core duo and core 2 duo mobile cpu's all have intel speedstep, so they clock down to say 800Mhz of 1Ghz when the system is not being used. This results in lower temperatures and longer battery life

    Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. I ran cpu-z and i didn't get any of the numbers you listed above. Here is what the read out said.

Under the Mainboard tab it says:
    Manufacturer - OEM
    Model - NB-14w2
    Chipset - ATI - RS400/RC400/RC410
    Soutbridge - ATI - SB400

    Under the CPU it says
    Name - Intel Celeron M 410
    Code name - Yonah
    Technology - 65nm

    A few more questions

So I wouldn't really see much of an improvement if I went from the 410 @1.46Ghz to the 450 @2 Ghz?

A slower Ghz Core Duo is faster than a Faster Ghz Celeron?

Core Duo run cooler and require less power?

I got the computer for free so I was going to try some inexpensive mods to get some more life out of her. I upgraded the 512 RAM to 2GB, and plan on getting a 160GB 7200rpm HD to replace the 60GB 5400rpm that it has now.I am looking for a relativly inexpensive way to squeeze all I can out of the comp. I have found really cheap Celeron M 440's and 450's and a fairly cheap Core Duo on ebay. (Cheap < $50).

One more question, I appologize if this is the wrong forum or thread just move it or let me know. Is the Celeron M 5xx series compatable with the 4xx series? Is it faster, or better? I have been doing some research and have a basic understanding but honestly i get a bit confused comparing all the different specs.

I am not very familiar with ATi chipsets.
The Celeron 450 would be a direct drop in, (it will work without any problem)

Hopefully someone else can tell you for sure if a core duo or core2duo will work

core duo processors have more cache and a different processor architecture so they are faster per MHz clock speed.

The celeron 5xx processors will not work because they are socket P Processors
Your system uses socket M celerons, and possibly core duo's
