My notebook gave up the ghost and Alienware will allow me to replace it with any notebook so long as I pay the difference if any.

So the question is which CPU is better to get in my new one, the AMD Turion 64 ML44 or the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+?

Im not interested in battery life and don't want a mobile workstation. I play games but I also use CAD, 3D and rendering software for work.

    Hope you guys can help.

X2 for sure. Dual core is the only way to go.

The Athlon X2 is a dual-core processor, meaning it has two processor cores on a single chip. It can multitask and encode/render a lot faster than a single-core CPU (if multithreaded). A dual-core processor is also a more future-proof investment.

May I ask what notebook you had beforehand?

X2 would be best bet. It's dual core, and even if it wasn't it'd be faster than the ML44. I know you said you don't care about battery life, but make sure you mean that, because desktop processors get horrible munchies when it comes to power.

Chaz, I had the Area-51 m7700, but the motherboard went 3 times in 5 weeks! Now looking at the Aurora m7700 (most probable choice), m9700 or mALX.

I'm also looking at Alienware; an Area-51 m5750. Would the Intel Core Duo offered on that be more efficient with the battery than this crazy-sounding X2?

Core Duo will be tons more battery efficient as the the Athlon 64 X2 is a desktop processor i do believe. It's like night / day different as far as battery life core duo will spank the x2 in battery life :>

Right, Core Duo seems to be take more battery than Penitum M. i hope that manufactuer focus on making a many cells' battery so that let a battery life can last longer.

Yes and performance wouldn't be much further behind either. The core duo gives more than enough performance for modern day games so you may as well get the benefits of a cooler running chip that won't be too taxing on your battery.

Though the AMD X2 has proven much better in games than intel's core duo in benchmarks.

Though! the Intel core duo was slightly better in photoshop speed tests...

    it depends on your usage
