I'm going to try and be nice and to the point here. I'm looking to upgrade the cpu in my notebook as I could use some more power for gaming and working with video.

CPU-Z gives me the following info about my laptop. The socket is Socket P (478) and the chipset is a GM965 with ICH8-M. Hopefully my Sig has any other info needed.

I've looked up info about the chipset online from Intel and found about 0 in the way of info on what cpu's it supports. So any info you guys have about that would be great as returning open cpu's isn't fun/possible in most cases.

    Thanks!

It supports socket P cpus, I think that's clear enough. Here is a list of C2D socket P cpus.

Well since some of the new socket P cpu's are 45nm I thought there would be a possibility of them not being compatable due to needing bios updates or something kind of like what can happen with desktop boards.

Throwing a T8300 or 9300 in there will be great. Thanks for the quick responses guys!

That can be an issue but most everyone who has posted with that chipset have made them work many with no BIOS update I believe.

Awesome, thanks Power. I just noticed someone in the Gateway forum using a T9300 in the same notebook I have. So the 8300 I was looking at should have no problems.

Going to a 9300 just doesn't seem worth the extra $50, but who knows.

Where is the 9300 only $50 more? Last I checked @ newegg it was like $75 more

lol... My brain rounded numbers really bad. Yeah, definately not worth 75$ for it. Wouldn't pay $50 more for it, let alone $75.

    The 8300 it is!

Do you know you can probably get a T7300 on ebay for ~$140?
It performs just about the same as the T8300 for a lot less $.
In any event the actual upgrade depending on your laptop can be relatively easy and rewarding. I upgraded the CPU in my laptop without any problems.

I have a thing about buying used computer parts, especially on ebay. About the only place I ever would do it was dfi street back when it was still dfi street.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm leery of used computer parts. And I like having the newest spiffiest parts. It's my inner geek at work ;)
