So, while this laptop is old I've decided why don't I do a processor upgrade. The thing is I have no idea how to figure out which processors I can use. Currently my bios is on update F.20. Also, I was wondering what kind of GPUs work with my laptop too. I remember reading something about a "whitelist" but I can't find that anywhere at all, which is why I'm asking here.

The T9500 or X9000 ought to work in theory (limit is 800MHz fsb). However, the X9000 does depend on whether or not the F.20 bios contains the necessary cpu microcodes (the T9500 is supported). If it doesn't then you'd normally mod the bios to include them, unfortunately the F.20 is a locked bios; so down-flash or mod-flash is no longer possible, only a re-flash of the F.20 itself. Using a programmer to flash the bios eeprom directly would circumvent the block, though. Same thing applies to the gpu upgrade, if there is indeed a whitelist (or it uses oprom vbioses).

For one thing you should lookup the HP Service Manual for your laptop based on its Part Number and in there it should list the GPU board that is uses. This should be the basis were one should first start looking to see what is available for it as well as which CPU it supports.

T9500 should work.. I personally doubt Hp would include the microcode for the X9000 so the T9500 should be a safer bet...

    Have a look at here:

So the T9500 should be the safest/best bet + good TIM like ICD or GC Extreme. Throw in a cheap 120/256GB SSD and ramp up your RAM to 4GB (667/800Mhz DDR2), if you already haven't done so. Performance will be great compared to your current config!

I had 8510w with T9300 a long time ago. I do have a faint memory that for some reason X9000 would not have worked, so I never considered it. It's possible someone tried it and reported on forums but I cannot remember it anymore :)
