Thats really not that much better anyway, is it? - only if its used on sata III is it significantly better. If your after a drive for an R2, then 510 holds no real benefit in my mind. If you have an R3, thats different....but still not as fast as some of the sataIII drives currently available such as the vertex 3.

Given that postville refresh is still only sata II, I think the prices should have been considerably lower, especialy given that you can get a sata III SSD which would futureproof to a degree. Sata II is old in my view and old technology isnt the way forward. Postville refresh should have been sata III.

    my 8150 has sata3.

i do agree that the g3's should have been sata3's as well. if they were, id be waiting for one. as it stands, the only thing it has on the 510's is it's rand 4k's which i feel could be improved on the 510 since it uses the came controller as the c400's (which dominate the 510 in rand 4k's), it must just be firmware. if intel updates the 510's fw for better rand 4k, it could have a nice contender that beats Crucials latest drive

There is not point of using a SATA 3 connection with the G3s. SATA 2 aka 3 gbps aka 300MB/s is more than enough since the Read is max 250 MB/s.
That Intel 510 SSD you have is a beast anyway so youre not doing any wrong by sticking with it :)
Only "benefit" Intel G3s will have is that they are using Intel controller instead of Marvel.

If i were to have a new laptop i might be looking for a sata III, but i wont move to intel sandy bridge until x68 is released, by that time we might see refreshes or new version coming for next year. Im hopping the G3 is a G2 in terms of reliability with better writes and randoms, the rest i dont care much, im pretty happy with the G2 performance. There is also a rumor of the Intel 700 series in the horizon.....

Ok according to another source the specifications for G3s are all over the place.

Here is what they are saying:

    40 GB: Seq Read: 200 MB/s, Seq Write: 45 MB/s (lol)
    80 GB: Seq Read: 270 MB/s, Seq Write: 90 MB/s
    120 GB: Seq Read: 270 MB/s, Seq Write: 130 MB/s
    160 GB: Seq Read: 270 MB/s, Seq Write: 165 MB/s
    300 GB: Seq Read: 270 MB/s, Seq Write: 205 MB/s
    600 GB: Unkown
    Random 4K Read/Write: 39 500 IOPS/23 000 IOPS

So after the "reviews", anyone still excited about these?

I'm most likely gonna be purchasing the 160 gig as I'm not at all disappointed with the performance; its what I expected.

I'm disappointed in general with all the new gen of ssds, OCZ with their shaddy things, C400 is good but in some tests even worst than C300, Intel G3 seems a lot like a G2, even with worst life expectancy. I kinda was hoping to see a clear winner, something worth dumping again big cash on it. I'm probably still going to buy a G3, mostly out wanting to deal with the least issues, and just forget this gens and start saving for G4.

For me, greater than or equal to 160GB, I will choose G3
    less than 160GB, I will choose G2

I might choose 120GB G2 for now (SATA2)(of course, after G3 released and see if there is any price drop). and wait for the rumor 522 (SATA3 using SF chip) (budget is a little tight)

I agree 100% with you Abula. I am in the same boat. Intel 510 seems nice, although it is on par with C300 in some certain tasks. And Intel 510 is expensive.
Anyhow, i have heard that 25nm flash will have a lot of cut in life expectancies, almost 50% less life before "byebye". Should that be any concern for people buying SSDs? How many years should we expect from them?

The seq writes of 60/80GB G3s are hilarious. 5x as fast with the 300GB compared to 60GB. Crazy. Wonder how much price drop we will see with the G2s? Well doesnt matter to me, i am already using the 160GB G2 and i am sick and tired of it and hunger for new tech :)

I am kinda interested to see how the c400/M4 stacks up against the 510. At the moment, I am pretty much disappointed with the news reagrds the G3.

I want to invest in a SSD, wanted the best regarding what would come from all of these new gen SSD's but they all seem so disappointing to me right now in one way or another. The 510 is priced too high, the G3 seems very lacklustre in performance (and lifespan) vertex3, i think we all know the score regards to OCZ and Crucial? - hmm....end of April.

Been looking at these for months now, waiting, waiting and well...like I say...couldnt really be more disapointed in the offerings. So much so that I may just stick with my raided 7.2k's..... :(

Intel's G3 seems to have doubled the guranteed(well tested anyway, not product gurantee) write and it use 25nm NAND ?

I don`t know why you are quoting my post when i didn`t say anything about the write speed but :)
Yeah the 300GB will have 205MB/s in Write while G2s had 100MB/s i believe. Yeah it is 25nm. My concern was the life expectancy of the drive.

Edit: Found a great article discussing is. It is part of the Vertex 3 preview.

Yes, I know it was talking about expectancy and Intel G3's expectancy have doubled according to the spec(well the leaked one anyway).

Yes, although I have not tried any of the newest SSD's, it does seem that the latest offerings that we have all been waiting patiently for have fallen a bit flat.

That said, I would sure love to try a C400 or G3 :) I would actually be more interested in the C400 from what I have read. Heck, the C300 seems like a decent player as well. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah I'm happy to stick with my current gen SSD's for a while.
