If you have a T5500, you most likely have a i945 chipset.
    You can upgrade to a T5600, T7200, T7400 or T7600

The T7600 is ridiculously overpriced, so you would be best upgrading to a T7400 processor. You should check ebay/craigslist/nbr marketplace/hardforum/anandtech sales for a good deal

Please note that a processor upgrade will only show a performance boost if your T5500 is running at 100% processing usage.

Open task manager, and do what you normally do on your computer. If cpu usage rises to 90-100% cpu usage for extended periods of time than a processor upgrade will be beneficial

If your system is not running 100% usage, than a memory or harddrive upgrade may be a better option for increasing system performance

Get a core 2 duo t7200. Its 2.0ghz 4mb l2 cache and 667mhz FSB. Thats .4ghz faster then your current CPU with twice the l2 cache. It should be a good bit quicker.

yeah my main reason for upgrading is for gaming. It tends to chug/crash alot when i play newer games. My video card is good but i think really its just the processor thats not keeping e up to speed. they point out the processor when i load them

What are the full specs of your computer, so we can help you decide what the real problem is:

    CPU
    GPU (video card)
    memory
    Hard Drive
    Operating system

I agree with GamingACU, give us the rest of your specs please.

By the way, you should be upgrading your memory first. 1GB is not enough for Vista, that's for sure.

I'd say your processor and ram are what's slowing you down. I wouldn't use less than 2gbs of ram, and upgrading to atleast a 2.0ghz c2d would definitely help out. Your graphics card isn't that great, but it should still run most stuff on low-medium without too much trouble.

Normally XP does not need more than 1GB, unless gaming is an exception.
