After reading over some previous posts over the last couple of days. I have decided to go ahead and purchase an SSD. I noticed people speak highly of the OCZ Vertex 2 and I have looked on "the egg" for pricing. So, I can afford a 120g-180g but there are these different models...
Which one should I get? Some links or part numbers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

More than likely someone is going to say to wait for the Intel G3 (3rd Generation) SSD's that are due sometime in Q1 of 2011. They are supposed to offer greater capacity at a lower price in addition to improved speeds. If you are set on purchasing now from what I've read you want to purchase an SSD with the Sandforce controller.

im personally gonna get the Samsung 470 series SSD, have saw some good review from users themselves
im getting de 128GB, and will still keep a look out for intel G3 SSD too since my notebook can support up to 3 Storage Drives -

Endless Shock, do you have to buy now?

Thanks for the replies.
What Samsung were you looking at? Do you have a link?
I have read some stuff on the G3's but they might not come out till Feb '11.
I really don't "need" one right now. I just have some extra cash and I was thinking of spoiling myself.

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
I would recommend SandForce controller SSDs right now. Some of the best read/write speeds for the money;
You can look at the OCZ Agility 2, or the GSKILL Phoenix PRO series SSD -
@Sacred:
Are you talking about this one Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 470 Series MZ-5PA128/US 2.5" 128GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) ? -
+1 Agility 2, Crucial C300, Corsair Nova.

Well, its always nice to spoil yourself, but if you don't need it right now, not only the G3 is poised to take off in early 2011.
I think you're gambling with money, performance or both if you settle for the current SandForce based offerings at this time. (SandForce based SSD is my only recomendation right now). -
I see your point... I think you are all right... I should be patient with "spoiling myself"... Thanks for all your input and saving me the cash!

While the read and write speeds of Sandforce drives look very impressive, these speeds are only reached with fully compressible data. Real world performance is usually lower.
Samsung 470 (available at Newegg) reaches similar speeds with all data.
Corsair Nova also beats the Sandforce drives according to Techreport. -

Just to point out Phil, I'm not really interested in the 'numbers' as you probably know by now.
Since an SSD doesn't increase my productivity, I am simply looking for an SSD that 'feels' faster than not only my current HD setups, but also all the other SSD's I have used/tried over the last year+.
In that respect, the SandForce drives are the fastest I've used. But I also haven't tried the Samsung 470, nor the Corsair Nova - yet. -

You're not reading what you're quoting.
And, benchmarks can, have been and will continue to be manipulated - so no concrete data there either.
The 'feel' is subjective to the user; but when the user can articulate the context of their statements sufficiently, then those remarks carry more weight with me than any benchmarks ever will. -
For my usage pattern the drive that boots and launches applications the quickest feels the fastest.
I am glad that is objectively measurable. -

If we're talking about a real stopwatch measured boot up and similarly measured application launches, well we agree.
If you're talking about Vantage, et al, then we're back to benchmarks that are simple statistics that can be twisted and taken advantage of to show almost anything the manufacturer (or the reviewer) wants to show.
Objectivity, I can agree with - but 'canned' objectivity is just never as good as the real thing. -
I use software to measure boot times (Bootracer) and application launching times (Apptimer).
I agree on Vantage, it's meaning is pretty limited. -

Phil,
Thanks! I now know about Apptimer too! -
Not to hijack but i think it's relevent to the thread....how does the Intel X25 drive measure up to the previous mentioned SSD's?
-

See:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/6861670-post12.html
Includes the Intel X25M G2 160GB drive (the fastest one). -
Newer drives like the Samsung 470, Sandforce drives and Corsair Nova are a bit faster.
What SSD to get?
