I want to connect my laptop (Thinkpad X61) to the TV. The laptop has a VGA port, and the TV has an RGB port. First, I thought that I could connect both ports with a VGA-to-VGA cable. I bought the cable, but the laptop didn't recognize the TV as a monitor. What adapter do I need to connect VGA to RGB?

Also, if I do manage to connect VGA to RGB, will the picture have a better quality than if I connect VGA to RCA?

If your TV has an input labeled RGB (with the same shape connector as the standard VGA), then that is same as VGA. You don't need special adaptor. Did you change the output from your built-in monitor to the external one (TV) ? You can do this either with a hokey combination (usually Fn key + Some other Function key like F7 or F8), Or from advanced display properties.
Also make sure that the TV is set to VGA input mode.
