Hi, I'm planning to buy a nice western digital my book 1 TB external harddrive. Is it good? If not what are my alternatives? I prefer to have a drive which has e-SATA in it like the western digital one.

    Thanks

if you plan to take it with you all the time, i'd suggest a 2.5" drive. except for cost/gb, of course. but the 2.5" drives don't need to have external power, that makes them much more flexible.

if it's for having at home, you may consider going much further, and go to a nas on steroids, a.k.a. a winhomeserver. then, all those external (and internal) disks are suddenly not important anymore.

other than that, i personally don't like the digital my book. they don't have a real simple onoff button. i don't like that.

But is it good? I don't really care about the on and off button. Is it much better than the seagate ones? Also i want a 3.5 inch one not a portable one. More help plz!! Thanks BTW

my dad had some. they so far never failed. but i can't say more as i personally run away from them. i really don't like them :) but for those who have it, they work.

i wouldn't say they're better than the seagate per se. they're just harddrives, all are about the same. chose one you like (and that is cheap. it's not worth paying (much) more for the same storage).

but be aware that the data will not be save on it. it's still just a hdd. it can fail anytime. if you use it to back up your system and data, it's fine. if you store data on it exclusively, be ready to lose it all :) (and that's why i don't use any of those external disks, but only my home server :)).

if you can get it for cheap, it should be fine.

NAS is the ultimate storage system, but its costs so much more than the OP is looking for.

So to answer your question. I am a big fan of WD and their external hdd's. WD has come a long way in reliability and speed.

I would say the seagate is a close second. I don't look at any other externals besides WD or seagate, so out of those two just pick one that has esata.

    Hey sean,

Which of these WD My Books are you planning to get?
Western Digital WDG2TP10000N My Book Pro Edition II 1 TB USB/Firewire Triple Interface External Hard Drive
    or
Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WDH1U10000N

The WD My Book Pro Edition II will definitely give you more connection options with Firewire 400/800 as other connectivity options in case you don't want to stick with standard USB. However, I've heard some users complaining about the loud fan noises it generates. It's significantly bigger than the My Book Essential as well and significantly more pricey.

As for some other options that you can check out, you may want to consider the following:
Western Digital Elements 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDE1UBK10000N (Black)
-Most users are saying this model is more silent, power efficient, portable, and has more rugged casing (appearing bulletproof they say), compared to other WD models. It's the same price as the My Book Essential on Amazon.

LaCie 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive, Designed by Neil Poulton 301304U
-This one's more about style as the design is a major plus. Lacie always makes their drives look like furniture display pieces. It's only $99.95 too and plug-and-play standard, so shouldn't give you any problems.

    And lastly, from Iomega...
Iomega eGo Desktop Hard Drive, USB 2.0, 1TB, Jet Black - 34269

Hope those suggestions helped. I personally use an 80GB 2.5" i got assembled with enclosure and all, and also a 160GB Seagate Maxtor Basics Portable.

However, I'd personally go for the WD Elements if I'm gonna purchase a 1TB one.

please make your own external hard drive. its very easy and i dunno why other people are not recommending the same...

    Especially if you need eSata.
WD external harddrives with eSata port are ridiculously overpriced.
you can get a nice external enclosure w/ ports more than just usb2.0 and a 500gb 3.5'' drive for around 100$s or alil less
you cant get the same price if you buy from WD or Seagate.

Because I made the assumption that the OP is not willing to make his own external.

I usually don't give advice about something where the person probably won't take that route.
