Docking solutions are usually setup so they are hooked up to a full keyboard/mouse and monitor and whatever other desktop peripherals that are needed. Basically it is a convenience. You simply plug the laptop into the dock and now you're hooked up to all your desktop devices.

It's exactly what it sounds like. You dock your notebook with the docking station for increased performance and features. Some docking stations come with extra USB/PS2 ports for instance, while others such as the Asus XG Station comes with onboard audio and a beefy graphics card. They also let you fold you notebook up in a way that will allow you to display via an external monitor easily.

As mentioned, it pretty much acts like a 'dock'. Lets make this into a metaphor haha.
Notebook = Ship
Dock = Port/Dock(duh!)
Ports = Workers
Data = Supplies
Pretty much the ship travels around, doing its business, and when the day is done, they dock into the port, where they get resupplied, refreshed and all.
It's not totally accurate, but its a start -
One big advantage is that if you have multiple peripherals, you don't need to unplug and plus 10 different items everytime you need to more the laptop.
What are the advantages/purposes of a laptop docking station?
