    Hi

This may seem like a stupid question but what
are the differences between the intel core 2 duo processor
and the intel centrino core 2 duo processor or are both
    processors the same?

    Thankyou

Centrino name branding is a Core 2 Duo processor using an Intel wireless solution and chipset, while a Core 2 Duo is only the CPU itself.

Also, wrt post #2, the desktop and mobile C2Ds are differentiated by their codename Conroe and Merom, respectively.

"Centrino" is just a marketing name. For a system to be labeled "Centrino," it must be using an Intel mobile processor, Intel mobile chipset, and an Intel Proset wireless card.

A system labeled as "Centrino Pro" uses the above three items AND Intel GMA graphics.

A notebook simply labeled "Core 2 Duo" either doesn't care about Intel's marketing names or is only using two of the three items listed (for example, a Dell notebook using a Dell TrueMobile wireless card can never be labeled as Centrino).

I don't think the GPU differentiates the Centrino Duo vs Centrino Pro, if they have IGP it will be a X3100 on both. The Centrino Pro has the Intel 82566MM and 82566MC Gigabit Network Connection. Gigabit Controller's most compelling feature is its ability to wake a computer from shutdown state (Wake on LAN), wirelessly. The other is Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) it is a hardware-based technology that facilitates remote out-of-band management of PCs by use of a small secondary processor located on the motherboard. Intel vPro on desktops.

To OP yes, they are the same thing, 100% as long as the CPU is a mobile one which bc13 already explained one way of identifying but would like to add that Penryn is now also "Centrino" and model numbers will always tell you if Mobile or Desktop. No doubts.
