Hi i bought my laptop 3 month ago i will like to know what can i do to my laptop to have even more better performance (ect:buy memory, download driver)
Acer aspire 5920G-602G16Mi
Core 2 duo T7500 (2.2GHz 800MHz,4MB L2 cache)
2GB RAM
GeForce 8600GS
Please give advise
Thx

2 gigs of RAM is nothing these dayz sonny.
id go to newegg and soup up my ride.

yeah according to my laptop manual book it say it support 8GB of RAM but i didn`t know it is DDR2 or DDR3 and what is PC5100?

2GB of RAM is more than sufficient, unless you're the uber-multi-tasker, and are running a 64-bit OS, which can take advantae of a large amount of RAM (even then, 32-bit applications are likely what you'll end up using most, and they don't tend to support more than 2GB anyhow)
You have one of the fastest mobile CPUs around, so there's no point wasting huge amounts of money there, especially since, a step-up in speed might be too fast for your laptop's heatsinks to handle, in terms of heat output.
Keep the chipset driver, and the GeForce's driver up-to-date, the 8600GS isn't as good as the GT, so maybe some overclocking with Rivatuner, or ATiTool (yes, it works with Nvidias, I've used it plenty, heh), could get you a boost in games, but again, the heatsinks might not like that.
If it's an MXM-3 add-in card, then you might find an MXM-3 module with an 8600mGT, or 8700mGT, to put into the laptop, but that's an unnecesarry spend, if you can just overclock your current GPU, or if you then don't play games.
Frankly, the only thing you might want is a bigger HDD, $200 will soon get you a 320GB 5400RPM 2.5" HDD from Western Digital (announced earlier today I believe, and I think I may nab one myself, the 120Gig is getting a bit small), but it won't improve performance, just convenience.
EDIT: I was too slow on the trigger
It can be any speed, it will just clock down to match the speeds of other RAM modules, or to the speed supported by the laptop.
And if anything, it would be PC2-5300, which is DDR2-667, which is basically standard in laptops now a days. -
Have you cleaned up your computer, software-wise? Usually they come from the factory pre-loaded with all sorts of junk running. Get rid of any processes that you don't need to have running, or do a clean install of the operating system and your software.
Adding more memory can help too, but unless you're running a 64 bit OS you can't make use of more than about 3 gigs of RAM. Most laptops have only 2 RAM slots, if yours already has both filled you'll have to throw out one or both of your existing RAM sticks to upgrade. -
Ohh thx alot man
-
Apparently your system is MXM 2 which is the same as the C90S which can have a 8600GT DDR3 much better improvement over your 8600GS.

Sorry buddy don't want to burst bubbles.
2gigs of RAM = mildly ok/acceptable for a few folks.
What about the real adventerous people, the people who get lost in their own lovely notebook world, with 10 open windows and applications? Then:
3gigs = sweet spot
4gigs or more = SAVAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Dude...you need a new HDD. Check out the solid state HDD. That'll increase your system's 'soup'-ness. The RAM is good, the CPU is good. Clean-up the OS, and get the SSD.

My desktop has 1.5GB of RAM and it still takes a lot to use it all. Many Firefox tabs, a few OpenOffice documents, Amarok, some server daemons, etc. and it's still very responsive.

8600GT is better? are you sure? coz went i chose this laptop 5920-602 it has 8600GS DDR3$ on it and it`s cost me more than 5920-302 which only has 2.0GHz and 8600GT and i when to geforce site 8600GSm has a higher Clock than 8600GTm

4GBs is mostly for professionals in video/image/audio editing at the moment, even Vista isn't that hungry.
I have Vista Business on my desktop, with 2GB of RAM, at this moment in time, with just Opera 9.4 open, 2 webpage tabs, one Unread Emails tab, I'm only using 39% of the RAM, and I suspect most people don't use much more than 50% of their RAM on average, running MSN, a web browser maybe 2-3 chat windows at once, and their emails. He'll really only need 3/4GBs if he's working with images, or doing serious multi-tasking or database/spreadsheet work.
Solid state HDDs don't currently really boost performance much, they're basically more beneficial with random access times, where they can easily beat the 150GB Raptors, which are ultra-fast.
And as I said, and jimbob83 backed up, and also stated, only 64-bit OS actually can see the whole 4GB of RAM, so there's no point in upgrading, if running all 32-bit applications, and a 32-bit OS.
If you're a gamer, the upgrade to an 8600m GT, would be more beneficial, your system is pretty well specced atm.
Oh, and yeah, again, as jimbob83 said, to get more RAM, you'd have to replace your current RAM. To get the best boost, you'd have to replace both sticks, for two sticks of equal size, and (preferably), equal timings/latencies, so that you could run dual-channel (without which, you may end up losing performance, since quantity !>= speed)
Although if you do upgrade, and you're selling the old sticks cheap, my laptop is currently running 2x512MB, so I could use a bit of a boost, I seem to multi-task more on my laptop than on my desktop, heh (running Visual C++, Word 2007, IE7, Excel 2007, and Access 2007, on Vista Business all at once can really make 1GB feel insufficient) -
I actually consider myself to be one of those adventurous people, although i'm not sure if that is the correct name for it. Nerd seems to be more common i think...
I practically live on the internet when life permits it, right now i have a dozen tabs open in firefox, left photoshop open with some unfinished art work, i'm downloading two movies with Azureus (hail axxo), i'm re-encoding a movieclip to divx, and there is some minor other stuff going on in the background like AVG and the Vista sidebar. I'm not even using 1.3Gb of ram, how on earth would you put 4Gb to work? I think that more then 2Gb is overkill for most (unprofessional) users and it probably will be for the next year or so, maybe two years even. But then again, a lot of people seem to like overkill, it probably has something to do with the alpha male syndrom or something..... (just being silly now, but not far from the truth in a lot of cases for sure i suspect
).

8600M GS GeForce
8600M GT
Stream Processors 16 32
Core Clock (MHz) 600 475
Shader Clock (MHz) 1200 950
Memory Clock (MHz) 700 700
Maximum Memory 512MB 512MB
Memory Interface 128-bit 128-bit
The 8600m GS is super-crippled, it's running half the stream processors, no wonder it's running faster clock speeds. The 8600m GS is actually more like the 8500GT for desktop PCs. Seriously, if gaming, upgrade, the 8500GT desktop isn't even close to a desktop 8600GT. Although the mobile 8600m GT is running really slowly compared to the desktop version, I'm sure that can be fixed with Rivatuner
And the other config with GS was more expensive because the mobile CPUs are damned expensive. I've seen CPUs with just a 200MHz increase in speed, going for upto £100 more than its slightly slower brother. It's extortionate. -
maybe i need more memory coz i using Vista and has Norton360 and AVGFree and lot of ACER programs at startup (etc:eyecam, wlan, acermangement, acervideocall)and when i play game i usualy open 2 game 1 for colecting and 1 which is i am playing but so far it doesn`t slow down i just saw the gaget meter show that my memory in use of 70% so i do like to add more memory so it will be more
are that wise? -
Storm3016, PEBCAC, heheh
Kelvin_Tani, backup, and reinstall, without using the original CDs for drivers. You're running an awful lot of bloat, and even though you're still only using 70% of memory, you shouldn't need to be running all that crap.
If you bougth Norton360, install it with the new install, if you didn't, just use AVG, it's not a resource hog, and it's mroe than good enough. Leave out the ACER programs, just install the drivers you need to make everything work, you likely don't need most of the installed crap. After that, you should likely need no more upgrades, unless you start playing a game where you don't grind all the freakin' time, and will probably want an 8600m GT, which can probably handle better graphics in newer games, like Crysis, Bioshock, etc. -
ok thx all guy that help me alot

Heh, yeah, PEBCAC to me means "Problem Exists Between Computer and Chair", or Chair and Comp, or Keyboard and Chair, etc.
What can i do for my laptop?
