Alright, this isn't the laptop that has 32 mb of hd space, etc, etc.

    This is a 2000 sony viao Pcg-981L

    It has:
    Intel P3 845MHz
    192 mb ram
    2 usb 1 port
broken ethernet(I could get a wireless adapter)
    9 freakin pounds
    1 min battery life.

As you can see, i can still use it, but its way to slow for anything. I use xp pro on it, and its really too slow sometimes. I'm hesistant on linux cause i know nothing (yes, as in, 0%) of linux, unless someone can help and has a good use for linux.

My hp laptop is my main computer, my dell desktop (P4, 512) is my secondary. This is too slow for a any major work, though i guess i could type papers and program on this.

    Any suggestions?

Junk it? Sell it for scrap to save up for a new laptop?

Ok, so one guy at my school wanted to get rid of his crappy car I guess. So he charged people some amount of money that I don't remember for some amount of time that I don't remember to do anything they wanted to the car. i.e. With baseball bats etc. I don't know if there's a way to do that with something the size of a laptop though, maybe if you used fire or something. But it's just not as fun as hitting something...

I have a 4.77Mhz laptop and it still works fine to this day. Heck it is worth quite a bit since it still functions and their were only a few of them made.

You should keep it, cause you never know when you will need a backup. If you dont want it, you can send it to me, to add to my collection :D

I say get a PCMCIA wireless card for it. That is fine for surfing so long as you don't mind being plugged in. I was using a similarly spec'd Dell Inspiron 5000e for about 6 months, then combined with some other money I got from buying, fixing, and selling computers, bought a new XPS m140 with the cash.

Keep in mind that since I did that, notebook prices plummetted (I sold for a good price, and bought the XPS after prices dropped) so it likely isn't worth $100.

    - Run Xubuntu on it - a simplified Linux distro that is meant to be light on resources

    - Use it for storage

    - Install Windows 2000 on it or upgrade the RAM

    - Donate it.

selling is not an option for me :(

I guess i could keep it in my school locker. Since this thing is a tank, it doesn't need a case. Then again, i'm lugging 9 pounds along with 30 pounds with book. I could use it for the quick essays or programming stuff i need to do. I don't do work on the school comps b/c they are all macs :/

If i leave it at home, what other stuff could i use it for? If i get a usb wireless adapter, will it be good for a home server?

1- install linux as you suggested
2- use nLite (it's a freeware) to slim down windows by eliminating all the things that you don't use in WinXP such as additional drivers, NotePad (maybe), Games and Internet games...
3- Put a good size HDD inside and use it as Multimedia server to stream your movies and music
4- Use it to play old/arcade games
5- Give it to a young brother, cousin or relative to introduce them to the world of computers.
6- Give it to your parents
7- Use it as an internet machine.

I don't think you should sell it in ebay as you want get for it a lot after the diduction of the insertion fees and the paymnt fees if you take payment ia paypal.

The only reason to put Linux on that would be for experiments, and for better performance over Windows.

I'm not a Linux user myself through I played with it few times. With a distro like Ubuntu/Xbuntu you can do pretty much everything that you can do with Windows. For the drivers, just search the net and you'll find penty of info on how to solve drivers related issues.

^ With hardware that old, driver issues are unlikely.

send it to some third world country, so some schoolchildren there might learn how to use computers.... or junk it... or put it in a museum...
