What do I do now that I've installed the SSD in my m17xr3?

So I just installed my Intel 320 120GB SSD today in Port 0 of my m17xr3 (with the HDD already in Port 1) and I'm not really sure what to do now...I'm trying to use the SSD as the boot drive. Can anyone provide me with a guide or some instructions on what I need to do now?

Best bet is to re-install to the SSD. Either that or use something like Acronis to move the image from your platter based drive to the SSD.

Assuming you use Windows 7, I would recommend the first suggestion as Windows 7 will self-tune itself - making sure the SSD is aligned, TRIM is enabled, Super-Fetch disabled, etc. But it is a lot of work.

How do I do those things? The TRIM, and other stuff?

Since you have an Intel drive download the Intel SSD Toolbox - it will do all the adjustments required for the drive to run properly on your system. For best results I'd recommend a clean install - starts you off right and trouble free with your new SSD.

So I do a clean install and then install the ssd toolbox?

Yup, also re-install all your drivers and stuff before worrying about programs and Alienware command center.

Okay and how do I get the ssd toolbox? Because the mini disc won't go in the disc drive, so will I be able to download it online after I install Windows? Or is the ssd unusable until it has the stuff from the toolbox?

Yeah install Windows and just download it online later.

The SSD is perfectly usable without it even.

Here is the link to the newest version of the
    Intel® Solid-State Drive Toolbox

I ordered the same drive as you. It will be here Tuesday. I already downloaded the toolbox and backing it and other stuff onto my external 1TB drive via eSATA drive dock.

The toolbox will do all of that for you.

I'm not sure what's wrong here, but I installed windows on the ssd and I deleted all the other partitions, but the driver disc is weird and it won't install drivers so I can't connect to a wired or wireless network. What do I do??

EDIT: I figured out how to get the wireless driver on so I have internet now. I can just download the rest from Dell's website

Alright so I ran the Intel SSD Optimizer in the Toolbox, so now what? Is that all I have to do?

It should be. If you want to check things out, you can compare what the Windows installer did vs. this - SSD Tweaks and Optimizations in Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums

Note, I wouldn't necessarily make changes to your system, but just take note on any differences than what is compared in this guide.

Is your system is booting faster? Anything that accesses disk (where it exists on the SSD), loading quick? Some people would recommend junctioning some of your user's directory, but that involves a little work and an understanding of a new backup paradigm. Other than that, that's pretty much all there is to it.

That is entirely up to you. However there is an easier way - Move the Users Directory in Windows 7

FWIW, my system is configured with JUNCTIONS (mklink and robocopy) moving my user's directory onto the RAID-1 disks. The problem with something like that is you if you lose the secondary HDD you would need to place a BACKUP copy of the "junctioned" directories back on the SSD - i.e. reverse the process.

So what's better? The method in the link you posted or doing it while installing Windows as suggested in the link I posted?

Alright, so I think you're trying to tell me to do the method that BrianWilder suggested. This one: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...ifferent/565f16a5-e5ed-43c9-8422-4f56aebb296e. I read through all of it and I can handle it. I was wondering if there was a way to transfer all the drivers over instead of having to reinstall them, because it took me nearly 5 hours to install all the drivers and get it all set up and I'd rather not go through that again.

The method I posted took all of 10 minutes to just copy/junction %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Users. If you want to reinstall and use another method, hey, it's your time.

I was in audit mode last night, and I closed my computer and went to bed, and this morning o
I had to boot up and it started to Windows where the login page had one user named administrator, but when I tried to enter it, it said the account had been disabled or something....how do I get back to audit mode?

EDIT: nevermind, I just restarted, and it put me in audit mode
