I have a tiny recessed screw that's almost 3mm in length and flat surface on the top.. These are smaller than the laptop (Compal HEL80) base/fan/motherboard screws.
I need to get into the laptop's GPU but I can't because this screw is in my way![]()
It turns both clock and counterclockwise but doesn't want to come out. I tried flipping it upside down (just like how I had to get the other screw for this optical disc drive out) but nope - still there.
I tried tapping on the screw head, but it didn't help. I think I'm in danger of burring the head of this now too.
I don't have any other tools at home besides a small PC repair kit. I was going to go to either Home Depot / Lowes to buy something - what tools do I need (hopefully not too expensive!) Do I need a drill? Something else? Difficulty?
Here are some images (the screws are much smaller ~3mm length/flat top) from the disassembly guide of the area I am talking about. Nothing can go under or within (i.e. like pliers) and it's somewhat of a sensitive area.
The screw in question is located right above that white connector (was for another build option that I didn't get)

My GPU idle temps (nvidia geforce 7600) is running are the mid 70C - 115C during idle or web browsing (higher end) before laptop shutdown. CPU idles mid 40-50C. via Everest and HWImonitor.
I cleaned all the accessible vents, removed the fan cleaned that with compressed air. I purchased the Cryo LX cooler last week because of this and purchased/applied Arctic 5 Silver (with cleaning solutions) to CPU and heatsink as per Arctic Silver's website instructions - I don't know what else is causing my GPU to heat up, but I need to see and guess add the AS5 to it and the heatsink. Video/Graphics display is ok. I don't do any gaming on this unit anymore, and temps use to be in the mid 40-50Cs gpu.
Thanks for the help and advice!

I cant get the pictures to work?
-
is there a standoff underneath that is spinning??
a pair of small needle nose pliers should do the trick... -
Usually you have to remove all the screws on the bottom of the laptop, then remove the palm rest/ keyboard (basically everything) before you can get into the internals of a notebook. Also, you usually want to take it apart so far that you actually remove the motherboard with heat sink assemblies and all still attached
maybe upload a picture of your own so we can see it more clearly? -
Thanks for writing guys -
I don't know what happened to the pics - I put them up again (in 1st post) and here just in case as url to the pics I uploaded -

It says in the manual that this has to be removed -
Sorry I don't have a "camera" or "phone" to take shots from...
The GPU and Heatsink (page 5-28) are the very last things that can be accessed (page - to get there, the keyboards, display, ODD, HDD, memory - (shown on page 5-23)
I didn't follow you from the standoff part - I can't reach anything underneath from that area.
Screw is like 3mm in height (flat head) and slightly recessed - can this be even extracted? I couldn't get pliers to get in there to "grab" from the top - and coming from the bottom is near impossible following the manual instructions - unless you see otherwise. The screw in question is located right above that white connector (was for another build option that I didn't get)
Will I need a dremel and screw extractor? Can these be found at Lowes?Last edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015 -
Is it one of these? Which number? (if not, could you edit a picture showing where it is at, you should be able to use MS Paint, or another simple program)
I read the PDF, Are you sure you aren't able to disassemble it further than this? it sounds like you are talking about a screw holding the wi-fi card in place (those screws do not do anything besides hold Wi-Fi card in place) -
No it was screw #2
Thanks so much for expanding that - was very cool of you.... It was the screw holding the optical disc drive/DVD-rom ...
What do I need to buy (locally) to get this screw out?
