In order of bang for the buck:

Put as much RAM as you can inside (4GB is great - even if it will only use ~3.5GB).

Put a modern (500GB+) HDD inside (partitioned to only use the first 20% or so for C: drive).

Re-install your O/S. Even better install Win7x64 (especially if you can put 4GB or more of RAM inside).

Run a defragmenter like PerfectDisk 12 Professional (prevents fragmentation as you use your computer).

Download and run (occasionally) CCleaner to remove all the junk files on your drive.

Update your BIOS, firmware (for CD/DVD's, network/video/other cards) and all drivers for your wireless, video card, mouse, HDD, etc.


If you are able to do all the above (new HDD, O/S and 4GB or more of RAM and all the updates...) you'll have a very good system for relatively little cost.

Don't underestimate what a clean install and the latest drivers can do for your system too (including partitioning your HDD to as small a C: drive as possible and a good/proper defrag).

did it come with a video card or intergrated? i have pretty much the same spec as yours. 4gb of ram will help out a lot. upgraded to 500 seagate momentus XT. you can upgrade to a 7200rpm drive it might help load up time. I don't know what cpu you can get i recently bought a t8100(2.1ghz) but haven't received it yet.

 

the card is integrated, so you are sol on gaming, what you can do is to get another laptop for gaming, however if you want general responsiveness:

 

If your laptop came with an integrated gpu, then the only viable alternatives in terms of upgrades would be the following:
RAM (max it out - preferably to 4GB if possible) and HDD (7200rpm one such as WD Scorpio Black - very reliable and fast - the 750GB version is rather affordable as well).

The rest of the tips I'd recommend would be a clean Win 7 install (4GB RAM or more will need x64 version).
You don't need Perfectdisk though.
Just use the regular defrag tool that came with Windows to defrag the boot sector files.
Ccleaner for regular cleanup (remove everything from the startup except the AV - if you use one - such as Avast, MSE or Avira - only pick one).


Also, you mentioned some of your games were running slow as of late.
Care to tell us if the games in question are NEW or the ones you played before (but suddenly experienced a drop in performance)?
If the games are new, then I must tell you that integrated gpu's by themselves are not exactly great game performers.
They do fine with certain games that aren't too demanding, but a lot of them will require at least a mid-range discrete gpu.

When was the last time you cleaned out the exhaust vents and the laptop itself from dust?
Dust buildup clogs the air-vents and higher temperatures easily overwhelm the system to the point where it will throttle down (slow-down) in order to avoid over-heating, or simply shut down/restart.
I recommend you open the laptop and clean the dust manually.

 

The games that are running slow are R.U.S.E and Team Fortress 2. Team Fortress 2 normally doesn't run slow on my computer but it has been as of late. R.U.S.E is a new game I got that runs slow on big battles (its an RTS) and unfortunately big battles happen every game.

How do you not know your own laptop's model?
Also, simply right click "computer" and say "properties" and you'll see your CPU and RAM. Use that to tell people what they're getting. Also, find out your screen resolution size, and if it has a mic/webcam or not. That's if you want to sell; what you should tell people.

 

Your laptop's model should be written on the front (check the keboard and screen areas) or the bottom panel (most certainly).

If you'll be buying a new laptop, make sure to fill out the FAQ and submit it so we can help you out on the purchase (and that you don't get yet another IGP which might not be adequate for your needs).

HP, Gateway, and Lenovo made use of this board, but Dell did not. So must be a prototype Dell.

My dad works for intel so we get discounts with dell

 

If you want something much much cooler than an alienware, you should get a precision m6500.

 

Precison is too expensive i would prefer something around $600 and alienware m11x has a sale thru this year which takes $200 off so it goes from $800-$600

 

model for my current laptop is 822T don't know the company though
