Out of Santa Ana Ca. since 1999, I suspect like much in computers they just stamp their name. The price is very good I checked CNet and you are getting 1/2 price. I bought a external CD-RW and HDD both off brands CD 5years HDD 4years no problems. I would go for it just always back up critical files and your set.

If your laptop has a firewire port, consider an external firewire drive instead. It'll be quite a bit faster than USB.

I would go for a more reputable brand, but that's just me. The idea of losing 500GB of data, pics, music, movies irks me. But I also back up to a DVD about twice a year.

Legitimate point, but if on a budget and get this or nothing I would not worry, with research it would not surprise me if this is manufactured buy a name brand or the name brand manufactured by the same supplier. Firewire is faster but I do have USB 2.0 and for mass storage works fine for me so should not be a deal breaker. If I could drive a BMW I would but Dodge is my budget and it gets me there. So it is a good price, it's not going to break tomorrow, been in business 8 years. Also I was on Seagate site they talk about failure rate .07% per year, I'm no mathematician but even w/ten times the failure rate your gonna be OK, if you think those odds are likely play lotto and win the money for brand name.

On newegg they list the same drive without the panda stuff for less than these guys retail price, but with less of a rebate. The newegg cust reviews say that it overheats and fails if you use it too heavily cuz there is no fan. Love Newegg for not editing out bad reviews! If you are just archiving to it it might be cool though.
What do you think of this external harddrive
