Aside from higher DPI with laser, is laser worth the extra money?

In general, the quality of the mouse matters more than whether it uses an laser sensor or not. Two of the very best mice around, the MX518 and the DeathAdder, use non-laser sensors.

If you want to play with high sensitivity the DPI of a laser mouse will be nice, though.

    laser mice *are* optical mice.

The difference is whether or not the light emitter uses laser light or non-coherent IR light. There are different lasers in use too. msft started using 'blue' lasers (instead of the usual red and near-red lasers) in some of their mice last year.

The long and short of it is no, depending on what you use the mouse for. If you're a serious, hardcore gamer then laser seems like a good bet with its higher DPI. Likewise, if you're a casual gamer, or someone that plays Farmville all day, then obviously the cost of a high DPI laser mouse is not justified, especially if you're on a budget.

However, there are some proponents out there that feel that optical mice "feel" better while gaming versus laser mice and vice versa. That is, the movement of the mouse cursor feels more fluid and natural (whatever that might be).

In any event, it comes down to personal preference. Personally, I doubt one-tenth of one percent of people on this planet could discern between a laser and optical based mouse. I would go for whatever mouse feels the most comfortable to use, rather than worry about whether it is laser or optical.

I have both a laser mouse and an optical mouse but I use the optical one to game with since the laser one is bluetooth. Come to think of it, I don't know why I even bothered getting a laser bluetooth mouse seeing as the connection makes the increased sensitivity almost useless. I just wish my optical one didn't crap out every now and then though, every once in a while it decides to shoot up into the air making me aim at the ceiling for a few seconds untill I can get it under control again, by which time I have usually been shot.

No clue... its a Vaio mouse... it says Laser on the bottom... but I don't really care.

Not that it makes a difference (for me) anyway.

    Edit:
And if anybody asks :) its bluetooth too - that was the important part for me :D and its reasonably small.

I use optical, and actually prefer "standard" DPI. Even at 800 DPI, I feel that I lose precision of mouse movement. Interestingly, while some of the top-notch gamers prefer very high DPI mice, some prefer unusually low DPI mice. I don't mind being fairly average at games, so I don't use either extreme or spend anything extra on mice.

I use the new 3,500 DPI optical-sensor Razer DeathAdder. It can compete with laser mice in terms of DPI, but it has the superior perfect control speed of optical sensors (i.e. the maximum speed at which you can physically move the mouse without tracking errors).

the emmiter makes no difference, there are some bloody low res laser mice out there as well, the difference is on the RECIEVER and the circuitry inside. a laser, an LED or a flashlight dont matter, its how well its picked up at the other end of the reflection.

and yes I love my Adder as well

I generally use my G9x at 2200 dpi. I know the DeathAdder isn't really a mouse I like the feel of (I wish Razer made a Imperator with the internals of the DeathAdder instead of that bad laser sensor), but the only concern I have is how the lift off distance compares.

When I make fast enough movements, the G9x doesn't feel as accurate, but I'm not willing to sacrifice much lift off distance for tracking speed.

Also, to keep this relevant to the thread: I use a Logitech G9x laser mouse.

optical mice have that annoying red light cant stand it. I like the laser ones that use invisible light. I currently uise steel series ikari but I want that new darkfield glass tracking from logitech then I can finally use the mouse without an annoying pad directly on glass surface.

Microsoft Bluetrack FTW. It tracks on ANYTHING. Plus you can use it as a blue flash-light or black-light at night or in the dark. :)
