I have a vostro 1500. tried speedfan and I8fangui with zero results  , I'm afraid that I'm doing something wrong with one or both progs. Any ideas or alternate programs? :)

edit: oops title should read "for fan control" can I edit that?

Yeah the mobo has to be made to work with software. The only real way is to do it manually via variable resistors aka pents.

Might just be me, but i8fangui works according to the settings I provided it. Not sure how since according to the last 2 posters mine should not be working at all.

What're you trying to do with the fan control?

If you're trying to quiet the machine I'd say you take to undervolting rather than forcefully trying to get the fan to run slower. There's a reason that Dell set their fans speeds as they are, and it's not to annoy the end user (as you might think XD). There's a great guide floating around here if such is the case.

If you're trying to speed up the fan due to overclocking (which I never recommend on a notebook), I wouldn't worry about it too much in general; ultimately at full processor load the fan will be running at full load, so trying to run up the fan earlier won't make too much of a difference.

Otherwise if you're just trying to even out the fan speed, undervolting is also a pretty good option, though kind of a roundabout solution in that case.

btw the fan algorithm is in the BIOS. Get the correct version and i8kfangui might work
