That is a port where you can plug your docking station in. It is usually found on the bottom of the notebooks. You put your notebook on the docking station, it 'plugs' in.

A docking station contains USB ports, which increase the amount of USB on a notebook. It also contains Monitor out ports, and sometimes DVI. Other ports like audio jacket et cetera are also seen, but not so frequent.

You can basically have a desktop setup connected to you docking station (monitor, keyboard, mouse, ethernet cable, power adapter, serial and other ports), dock (connect) you laptop and turn it into a work station. Remove it, and you are portable again. Fairly common in the business environment.
