Its a large rectangular port on the side of older laptops. Most of the pcmcia ports have been replaced by express card slots.
Pcmcia ports are generally used for external wireless cards, port replicators, sata ports, usb, firewire, and such. Pcmcia was the solution to upgradeability in many older systems. If your system had a pcmcia port, you could upgrade to the faster usb 2.0, firewire or the latest wireless cards.
As of last year the pcmcia port was discontinued, and replaced by the faster expresscard slot, which is smaller, 34 pins instead of 50.
Come on guys, the man probablly looked it up on wikipedia, but did not understand it. Its always good to throw in your 2 cents.
