So they promised a write caching enabling firmware in 2012, 2012 is all but over and I can't get them to even talk about it. What happened? The 750 still uses the firmware it shipped with, there hasn't been any word of an update like that for a while. Anandtech said their test firmware made quite a difference with it.

I would have loved to see that - a year ago (I still have a few 750 Hybrids in use)... Seagate has lost it's running start in this market (SSD's are cheaper and larger and HDD are much cheaper and even larger than the 750GB offered).
-
It's still the best laptop HDD, which was clearly the aim of Seagate's XT drives. (the scorpius are slower, and the 1TB drives are VERY slow compared to their 750 counterparts)
-
It's still a promise they never kept, no matter how much better SSDs are getting. And I got my XT for 19 cents a gigabyte, even after all this time the cheaper SSDs are over a dollar a gigabyte on average, the better SSDs up to two or more. And forget about 750GB SSDs. 1TB 2.5 inch 9mm high hard drives are all still 5400RPM if I'm not mistaken, and the flash cache is still worth the small premium imho.
So what's the story? Part of my purchase decision was the promise of even better performance with a firmware update, with read and write caching both. -

The 'story' is never buy on a promise - buy on what is delivered in your hands 'now'.
-
Fair enough, but it was only a small part of my purchase decision, I still like the XT 750 for laptops with one drive bay.
If a video card maker promised that a future driver would increase performance by a very significant amount, people who bought it wouldn't forget so easily. They should be held accountable for this, even if they discovered it wasn't as good an improvement they thought and canned it, they should have officially said so instead of keeping it under wraps. -

I agree 100% with you - but it is hard (not always impossible though) for us mere mortals to 'make' giants bend to our will (and keep their promises).
What happened to Seagates promised firmware for the Momentus XT that enabled write caching?
