I just spent a good amount of money on laptop and want to make sure I protect my investment. I passed on the accidental coverage for the warranty to save 170 bucks.
God forbid I ever spilled anything on the keyboard, what procedure should I immediately follow to increase my chances of nothing going wrong. Ive read all kind of crazy ideas and just want a level headed answer.
Are there any common accidents other than drops and spills not covered by basic warranty that I should watch out for or be ready to react to.
Should I just bite the bullet and buy the 170 dollar accident forgiveness for the 1700 laptop while I still can?
What do you guys think about all this

My home insurance actually covers accidental computer damage so check your insurances and see what you got covered.

Interesting, will definetly check that out for while I am at home, but even then. I will be going to school soon and I seriously doubt that the dorms would offer that kind of insurance.

Don't forget about theft insurance too--that's always a risk with a laptop.

The Fire Snake Notebook Virtuoso
The simple thing I follow is not to eat or drink near my laptop. Once I am done with the meal or what ever, I use the laptop. That can save a lot of potential problems. The other thing is damage from falls. Make sure that when you carry the laptop that you have it securely. Get a well padded bag and sleeve or get a really good hard case and put the machine in that to protect is from falls. The other thing would be to make sure to protect its internal components from heat damage. Make sure that none of the vents are blocked when using it so that machine can exhaust the heat it produces. Maybe a laptop cooler might be a good investment, but I don't know how effective it is...

If you spill on it, immediately power it off. Then start getting it cleaned up. You should remove the keyboard and determine how far the liquid has gotten. You will probably have to disassemble the notebook and carefully clean everything. Then you must let it dry before re-assembling and powering on.

I'm not buying insurance for any computer. Just making sure it works when I buy it.

I've spilt enough beer and snacks on my old laptop to feed a family in Bhutan for a week. And it never once gave me grief for it, although I had to pop a couple of keys off to get a hard grain of rice out from underneath. I retired it after the USB started going wonky, but I suspect that had more to do with tripping over the mouse cord one too many times.
I wouldn't worry about it, and just follow common-sense when using it (unlike me). Don't eat, drink, or have a party around it.
What if...
