A new VAIO I love is on sale on eBay, and I badly want it. Problem: I own an HP dv6000 with a 320GB hard drive. The new PC has a 250GB HD. If I just swap out the HDs, will the VAIO force me to restore it to VAIO factory settings? I basically want to know if I'll be forced to run a backup recovery of my old files or get away with merely swapping without starting over. Please help soon.

You will have to at the very minimum reinstall Windows, since they're totally different machines with different drivers and hardware.

You're going to have to wipe the HDD and reinstall the operating system.

If you have a external disk you can make a backup then swap the hdds after this, restore the backup in the laptop, the software that you can use for this operation is Acronis True Image.
