I'm sure this HDD is done for, but is there anyway I can recover the data from it before I dispose of it?

You've opened it? Then, it's very likely that you destroyed part of the data on it. The heads glide on a thin layer of air over the platter and even a tiny speck of dust between the two is enough to ruin part of the platter.

if you have a parrot you can use the disc as a mirror in its cage. thats all its good for now.
hard drives have to be opened in a clean room with filter extraction which can cost megga wonga to hire.
all its good for is the rubbish bin now.ellalan likes this. -

That drive is worthless once you open it like what the video is showing. You want to recover the HDD data use software to recover. Opening it makes it a table weight and no amount of closing it will fix or let you recover it. Once you open it - it's trash regardless of what you may think. You need a high level clean room to begin to even open the drive to work on it and the right equipment to even start recovery of the drive.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -
You could've used the freezer trick, but no, you had to go HAM on that poor hard disk and now it's just garbage.

Sorry you had to learn the hard way. But (a) backup your data regularly (b) backup your data regularly (c) backup your data regularly (d) never open a mechanical hard drive if you want to try to recover data (e) backup your data regularly.
On the other hand, you could turn it into a cool looking clock...

Or if you're handy with a dremel tool...

just in case its not been mentioned, backup your data regularly
now thats a ruddy good idea HTWingNut. on a monthly basis the cage in the basement of my hospital has roughly 2-300 computers dumped in there awaiting disposal. we could make a mint making clocks out of drives.HTWingNut likes this. -
I've actually made a clock like the one I posted, it's not too hard really. But the one posted by rcb.to.ca would take a mighty fine hand with detail... and lots of patience.
What in the world is wrong with this HDD? [VIDEO]
