The AC adapter is the power brick that connects your laptop to the wall outlet for power.

Some resellers and OEMs offer an option to buy an additional AC adapter for a few coin, which you can use for several things. You could keep one in your travel bag and leave the other at home, or you can use it as a backup in case something happens to the original, stuff like that.

Your laptop should ship with one already (it's one of those things that is always included, along with the battery). Buying a second AC adapter is completely optional.

If you're buying the computer used, then it's useless without the AC adapter. Once the battery is dead, then the computer is useless. So in short, you can not live without the AC adapter.

^^^ Definitely this. I wasn't thinking if it was possibly a used computer, just assuming a brand-new one. If you're buying it used, make sure to ask if it does come with a charger.

I keep a few. One at home. One in the office and one in a pouch that I just grab if I find that i may need one on a longer outing... Very rare that I do though because my laptop uses 2 batteries including one in the media bay.

    Legit Question?

If so the AC adapter is the device responsible for converting the alternating current (AC) to Direct Current (DC) that your laptop runs on.

Without it the laptop has no means of power other than the battery, and this adapter is also responsible for charging said battery.

You can probably get one very cheap on ebay if you are not concerned with having an OEM brand, since this is going to be a used laptop (New ones include it) probably not much reason to spend top dollar on a OEM branded adapter.
