    DDR - Double Data Rate
    2 - Two
    3 - Three

What is it? It's JEDEC specifications for volatile memory used in personal computers. In other words, it's just what we call our memory.

basically they're different generations of RAM with DDR3 being the latest , fastest and least power consuming...

Besides that, most people won't notice the difference, though DDR3 is the way to go and DDR2 is past it's peak.

if DDR3 is twice as fast as DDR2 they should name it DDR4 :D

I was going to suggest that and read the article on wikipedia about DDR2 and DDR3 RAM...

Why do you need to "interact" with people when you're question ques up a standard plain old boring text answer? Go on Wikipedia and type in DDR3, simple as that, jesus i don't know why you complicate things.

does it play a role in gaming? could it in future?
does it increase the price a lot?

    *points above*

    i would rethink your name

Oh you think so eh? I would rethink how you ask questions, you've gotten all of what you want to know.
1-Tests have shown that DDR3 improves gaming performance by up to 20% (hardly a reason to upgrade just for DDR3 IMO) Info about this can be found here
2-Go to this page, and notice the first 2 results, both same manufacturers, althought this is a crude comparison, the DDR3 1333MHz RAM is 49.99, the same 2GB module in DDR2 flavor is 44.99, right now, prices for DDR3 RAM and DDR2 are getting closer and closer.

Didn't think i'd have to do the digging for you but i guess so, rather shallow digging at that too.

    yh me too,

when i posted this thread, i thought it would go into intense discussion again, like some other threads i posted which went upto 30 comments.

maybe, i didn't need to ask the question here after all :)

Not a good answer. If only those questions are considered legitimate the answers to which cannot be found through a simple web search (heck, or even by just using Windows Help), this forum would be deserted, because roughly 99 out of 100 questions here are of that type.

And we don't want that, because then the operators of this site could not make money out of it...

ok , this might be getting a little off topic but is there any difference with a core i7 quad with 1066MHz DDR3 RAM and 1333MHz DDR3 RAM?

how much does clockspeed matter in ram?
EG: in Asus g73, 8 gb ram comes with 1033 mhz clockspeed, and to get 1333 you have to pay 150$ more.

    is it worth it?

The important thing to keep in mind with DDR2 and DDR3 is that they are not interchangeable you have to use the one your laptop motherboard is made for.

On a laptop they use different slots so you cant do it on accident anyways, on a desktop they use the same slot though and there are a few desktop motherboards that support both DDR2 and DDR3 on the same motherboard chipset.

Its not very important, other than some higher numbers in a memory benchmark. In real life performance and usage you wont notice the difference.

If you were getting your own ram why not pay the $10 or $20 more for the faster RAM, but for stock systems where it cost HUNDRED+ for the faster RAM its definitely not worth it.
