So I was searching for a replacement mobile cpu and found this on ebay.
Intel Core i7 3610QM 2 3GHz 6M 2500MHz QC0R CPU Laptop Processor AW8063801013511 | eBay
The description says its a QC0R engineering sample but I have no idea what the differences are between this and the retail version.
Could someone enlighten me?

The difference is that they are offering a version that is effectively stolen.
And cannot be legally sold. -
Huh... interesting.
Would buying this be illegal then? -

Yes.

Engineers arrested for selling sample CPUs on eBay - TechSpot
Anyway, I've used two ES CPU's so far. A i7-2600K which was pure awesome and win (the thing would do 4.5GHz at 1V on air), and an old Core 2 Quad which was a piece of unstable trash.
It's pretty hit-and-miss. Technically illegal to sell, but usually benign to buy, but you're still taking a risk. Usually shouldn't purchase one without some intel burn test ran, etc. They can be defective.
Qualification Samples are safer, since they're usually retail chip material.
What is a QC0R cpu?
