Maybe a dumg question, but I don't have any experience with laptops. I do have a laptop that powers on but does not boot at all. It only retains the power and charges the batterybut does not boot even to BIOS, nada. So I am trying to find a cause. Maybe it's the power board but I am not sure what it is that it actually exactly does.
Thanks.

i had this problem with an old toshiba, and it was caused when my motherboard died, the bios will not load nor did the "Toshiba" screen.
they sound like the same problems to i am think you need a new motherboard instaled in your computer. not cheap but it is the only why to get it too work again
note *** you would lose any infomation on your hard disks is the same motherboard is installed.
good luck. -
sorry when i wrote the origonal post it did not show up so i wrote another. well guess there all ther now???
sorry again -
Sometimes in laptops the "power board" will be a separate circuit board from the motherboard. this is not very common though, but "power board" is still used to describe that section of the mainboard that handles the power conversion and battery charging.
If you are feeling adventurous, you can disassemble the whole laptop and see if you can find the problem and fix it with some soldering. Otherwise, repair by replacing the motherboard is likely your only option.
I resurrected an old gateway laptop that had a bad power connection for the ac plug. Soldered it back on and got a good 7 months of use out of it before it finally totally died and won't boot or charge the battery anymore.
If it is getting power and charging the battery, then the problem is more likely somewhere else on the mainboard. Fixing it yourself is much less likely to be an option in this case.
you will not lose any info on the harddrive unless the repair place you send it to wipes it. if they replace the board with the same make/model, reinstalling will not be necessary because all the drivers will be the same. But it is always a good idea to back up everything before sending it anywhere.

OK, Thanks a lot for responses. I gues I will find a mobo on Ebay and will replace. I am not worried about data, all is backed up. Again, thanks.
