I see that Micro Center sells IPSG boxed Intel Processors? What's up with that? Is it the exact same processor? Why is this done? Does some company buy a large quantitiy from Intel and then re-sell them?

Yes, you are correct on all counts. I think IPSG is part of or owned by microcenter.

As a matter of fact, that's the case with most computer components. Most everything is made by only a hand full of companies that merely rebadge them.

I think it is too. So it is the exact same processor as it would be in an Intel box? That would explain their super low price on the i7 920. They must have bought thousands of them and gotten a good price from Intel. There is no middle man. Micro Center is selling it for 199.99 in store only. That is a great price.

Microcenter/IPSG is the middle man. You are buying only the chip itself in a small protective container. Most places call it OEM, but Microcenter just has to be weird.

But it is the same 100% Intel product, correct? It is not made to their specs.

Yeah, it is the exact same thing. Intel sells the processors in nice boxes for consumers and in large trays of bare chips. This is just one of the latter.

I have a Mirco Center in my area. It's quite a store. Some prices are comparable to Newegg, others are not, but they have a sale about once a month and have something from every category in there.

    Thanks for the replies.

I love microcenter. Bought a Q9550 for 89$ about a year ago on sale. That price was literally a steal.

I bought an i7 920 processor for $199 through my local Microcenter and it came in an Intel retail box. Not sure if that's the norm, but it's how mine came.
