bluetooth is a form of wireless technology. You might have heard of it in cell phones, where it is used for wireless headsets and to synchronize data.

In laptops it is used for the same reasone. Wireless mouse, keyboard, headset, printing services, file sharing (just like wireless network but much slower)

If you don't have it built in and later on need it, you can always get a USB dongle that looks much like a USB flash disk to add the capability

Bluetooth is a radio/wireless standard for short ranges and for communication between 2 devices...like wireless mouse, wireless speakers, microphone or syncing data with a PDA/cell phone. Internal part just refers to the Bluetooth being built in to the laptop rather than external component(usually through the USB port).

EDIT: Hey! I was supposed to answer this question first. :p

Depends on your uses. If you have a Bluetooth enabled printer, mouse or other such devices then it is pretty useful and having it built in will avoid any such dongles sticking out of the laptop.

I find bluetooth extremely useful. It is very easy to send a small file to a friend's bluetooth enabled laptop or other mobile device (like a cellphone or PDA), or to let mobile devices control your laptop from a distance (some devices have remote control functions built in).
However, bluetooth is a bit insecure if you don't pay attention. People can send you (evil) files and if you don't pay attention and accept and run, might damage your computer.

It could be useful in the future, but since you didn't know what it was it probably won't kill you if you don't have it. It would e useful for me since I have 2 PDAs I use.
