So a while ago my cd rom drive died and wouldnt open/work at all or be detected by the bios. I finally decided to open the case and try removing/reinstalling the drive to see if it was a seating problem, no avail. When i took it out, every time i moved the cd drive i could hear sort of clicking in the drive like something moving around in it. Is that normal? I was wondering if there was any way to fix my cd drive itself, i probably wont get it replaced anyway because i can just buy an external usb dvd reader for about $15 since i barely use it.

No, odds are you cannot fix it. Optical drives are the most frequently broken parts of a computer because they are made up of more fragile moving parts than any other componant.

The gears are plastic, the bands are rubber bands--it's amazing they last as long as they do.

Even if you can find which particular plastic gear is crapped out, getting a replacement is nearly impossible unless you have another broken drive laying around.
