What is the Nvidia equivalent to the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB of GDDR3 (It's a desktop card)? If there is an Nvidia equivalent, how do they compare - which is better?
-
you should search a little bit in the forums for the comparison of hd 2600 and nvidias 8600gt.
this will answer your question a bit more detailed, but i can tell you the 8600 gt is a tad faster. -
nVidia Geforce 8600M GS 256MB. They're about the same. The nVidia Geforce 8600M GT 256MB is better than the ATI Radeon HD2600Pro 256MB, however.

The Nvidia equivalent to HD2600 Pro is 8600 GT. The 8600 GT is faster. The Pro is merely an underclocked HD2600 XT, so it can be easily OC'd. These are all desktop cards, by the way.
-
I mean the Nvidia equivalent DESKTOP card, the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO comes in the iMac. -
The HD 2600 Pro needs a good OC to be comparable with the 8600 GT (I've been investigating). It doesn't Actully have a nVidia equivalent, as the HD 2600 XT is the main competitor to the 8600 GT. Unless, maybe a 8600 GT with DDR2.

Is the 8600 GT (Desktop) more powerful than the 8600M GT (Laptop)? Also, is the desktop version GDDR3 and 512MB?
-
Yes, Yes and Yes. Though it is available as DDR2 and 256 MB.
Why do you ask, by the way? You never stated that. -
Is the GDDR3 memory in the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO the same as in the Nvidia 8600 GT? Also, what kind of gaming performance will I get in next-gen games (Crysis, COD4, etc), if I have an iMac w/ ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO, Intel Core 2 Extreme 2.8Ghz, 4GB 667Mhz RAM.
I know that this is a mainly notebook forum, but there is a huge wealth of knowledge here, so please excuse my deviation from the flow, I just really want to know if you can game on the new iMac (in Windows of course). Thank You -
well, the memory type is the same. The difference between DDR2 and GDDR3 is basicly higher clocks and lower powerusage for GDDR3.
CoD4 should run on Fairly high settings, while crysis is medium-ish. Check how good 8700M GT runs games, as well as 8600M GT GDDR3. You should be around there. Maybe identical to mobility HD 2600 XT.
OC, and you can get higher results, around 8600 GT GDDR3 levels. Depending on how your gpu overclocks. -
Can you overclock the CPU and GPU in an iMac, or only on a PC? Will it void the Apple Care warranty or damage the machine (does the iMac have a powerful enough cooling system to handle OCing)?
-
The iMac is a PC. You can when you're in windows, not sure about OS X. There's no need to OC the CPU (not even sure if it's possible).
-
I have the 2600XT as being 30% more powerfull than 8600m GT 3DMark 06.
-
I'm talking about the HD 2600 PRO. Maybe the Nvidia:ATI ratio is different for mobile GPUs than desktop GPUs
-
Could the iMac in anyway be considered a gaming machine, or is the Radeon HD 2600 PRO too weak?

A 2600 Pro will handle games ok, it depends what games! What kind of things are you looking at?
I wouldnt call it a gaming machine at all but it would be capable. -
I looking at next-gen games - Crysis, COD4, maybe Age of Conan (some World of Warcraft).

In that case you should look for something more powerful likely running Windows.
What is the Nvidia equivalent of the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO?
