    Hi all, I've been an avid reader of the forums for a while now.
    This is my first time posting so be gentle :p

    Recently I've been doing some research and have come to the conclusion that not all DDR3 1333MHz memory is created equal, some manufacturers memory can be a higher clock speed than specs would indicate and some is in fact lower than the 1333MHz spec.

    I am just wondering is there a certain brand of memory module that will outperform the rest?
    I am looking for a 2x4GB configuration to use in conjunction with an overclocked i5-580m (~3.80GHz) and I am looking for the absolute best RAM to achieve the highest CPU clock possible :D

    Cheers,
    Tom

    Even though all memory pretty much comes from the same place, stick with a reputable brand name; Corsair, GSkill, Crucial, Kingston are my top picks.

    And those premium RAM are worth it, they are usually higher binned memory and **sometimes** will OC better. It is the luck of the draw. 1 person may say brand X and series Y RAM overclocks great but another person with brand X and series Y won't be able to overclock for crap. Also the luck of the draw with the processor. Good luck!

    Pretty much what Tsunade_Hime said. There's no brand that will guarantee you good OCing but it's normally best to just make sure you get RAM from a reputable brand. It's more of a make sure you don't buy questionable RAM thing more than a find the best RAM possible thing.

    Thanks for the fast replies guys, They have been a real help.

    @NotEnoughMaterials
    Are you happy with the G.Skill? this is the only memory 4GB DDR3 locally available to me so if you think its reliable, I might just take the plunge and see how that goes.

    Cheers,
    Tom

    GSkill is a reputable memory manufacturer. Really, I'd say any memory with a lifetime warranty and the same timings is pretty much equivalent. SuperTalent, Mushkin, etc are all fine as well. OCing RAM is kind of pointless as well, since RAM is almost never the bottleneck of a computer system - it won't make a difference how fast it runs if the HDD/CPU/etc has to play catchup.

    @MexicanSnake
    That HyperX RAM sure is expensive! :D
    Cant seem to find any 4GB SO-DIMMs though..

    @MidnightSun
    I'm more worried about finding RAM that will allow me to OC my CPU to a higher speed :)
    Not so much OCing the RAM itself, In the notebook in question, (ACER 3820TG) There have been a few cases where the ram has been a main contributor in holding back how OC-able the CPU was.

    I might need to ask Hendrickson about his experiences. :cool:
    Thanks for all your responses,
    Tom

    Well what we are saying is just buy reputable RAM, but there are absolutely no guarantees which RAM will OC better. You could buy 2000 sticks and not find anything or your first sticks of RAM could OC good.

    Aside from the Kingston Hyper X, you aren't going to find any. What you do if your RAM is holding back your overclocking is to modify the SPD table. Just buy your RAM now and figure that out later.

    There are few binned RAM models, however they are all basically dead. They are very rare and can cost a pretty penny. I don't think I have seen any good binned ram models anymore (series sold for extreme overclocking). It's pretty much luck of the draw and chances are you won't get anything golden.
    Specially in the laptop segment.

    I recommend getting some 1600 mhz DDR3 (check the voltage) and overclocking that way by setting it to 1333 mhz or 1066 mhz as well as timings then upping the fsb..

    Err the only DDR3 SODIMM modules that run at 1600 I've seen on Newegg is the Kingston HyperX..

    Just make sure when you install new RAM you run memtest or some other burn in test to make sure it's good.

    Most of them are exactly the same design based on Hynix or Samsung/SEC's latest 2Gb or 4Gb chips. Crucial uses Micron and Kingston prefers Elpida, but that's pretty much it.

    Kingston HyperX could be slightly different but it comes with a premium. With no BIOS tuning in most laptops it is nothing but ordinary.

    There are other "OEM" ram modules that run at 1600mhz, however those are quite hard to find. I know for sure Samsung/Micron have some, I think I have seen some Epilda as well however I don't remember well.
