I am receiving the imminent failure message on a hard drive. I was told a lot of things could cause this message to be displayed and it does not necessarily mean my hard drive is going to fail.
I would rather not buy a new hard drive because I am selling the notebook. I would like to know if the hard drive is serviceable.
What software can I use to diagnose the problem and possible repair the hard drive?

run hdtune pro , and post a picture of the smart data section and we can see what is going wrong.

imminent failure does not mean serviceable.......

All the drive manufacturers offer diagnostics for their drives, that's where I'd start, though SMART data can be interesting, it's not the be all end all.

I downloaded the software from the manufacturers website.
There is a utility to repair bad sectors. The test takes 4 hours to run.
Am I wasting my time. Can all bad sectors be repaired? -

Some bad sectors can be tested and marked good, but they are most likely weak and will fail again , you also have 4 pending bad sectors , once you hdd starts getting bad sector`s you should start looking for an replacement.
Not all bad sectors can be repaired.
since you are getting a fail on reallocated sector count , you can run a error scan using hdtune, it can take a while though.

run an error scan in HDtune... i would trust it more than some manufactuer tools.. but if ur drive is failing , see if u can RMA it and get a replacement.

I am selling the notebook and don't want to buy another one. -
