Without considering performance, what is the coolest running hard drive available for a modern notebook? Because hard drives reside directly under the left palm rest, I would like to have one that is as cool temp-wise as possible.

Highest capacity 4200RPM drive around will do it. Hitachi drives tend to run a little hotter (and get more performance for it), so stick with something like Seagate. I cannot recommend Samsung drives based on my experiences with their mechanical drives.
SSD drives might run cooler, but you'll have to ask Les about that. I could be wrong. -
Probably a 160Gb 5400rpm notebook harddrive. It is hard to judge how hot it will run because different notebooks have different harddrive caddies, some have open caddies which allow air to pass over the harddrive, and some do not.
Samsung harddrives are generally the coolest running drives, hitachi's tend to run hotter because hitachi cares more about performance than heat. Seagates tend to be the quietest, but they consume more power.
The harddrive which consumes the lowest amount of power is generally the cooler running harddrive.

Justin, as a fair btw chances are you will unable to ever feel the temp of your HDD. Mine never goes above 42c, and although i know i cant feel it i find it unlikely that you would feel it much... What laptop do you have it might help determine how noticeable it would be

its probably a HP pavilion which has poor HD placement/design
If price doesnt matter then jump straight to a SSD drive. That will barely make any heat compared to a mechanical HD because no friction from moving parts! -
I haven't bought a notebook yet, but the HP special editions have the most comfortable keyboards I have felt when trying out different brands at Best Buy and Office Depot. I like how the keys feel (smooth texture and solid movement) and the keyboards don't flex like I noticed on Toshiba and Gateways. I also I also prefer keys that have a satisfying downward movement (not too shallow). Is HP the only brand that positions the HD underneath the palm rest?
What is the coolest running HD available?
