    What is the difference between the 640GB 5400RPM 8MB Cache Buffer (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s) and the 500GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Buffer (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s)?

The 640GB 5400RPM 8MB Cache Buffer (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s) is slower with more storage space while the 500GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Buffer (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s) is faster with a bit less space.

the greater the rpm the faster the drive.

So the laptop I'm looking at has a GT 540M, i7-2630QM, which one do you suggest I get? I'm also looking to play BF3

I don't think I'll ever end up using 500GB, let alone 640GB, I haven't even used 300GB on my computer of 4 years right now

I would get the 500gb 7200RPM 16MB Cache Buffer since it spins faster which will make the load screens a bit faster. I will be personally using an external drive for storage so i would go with smaller and faster.

If you want a super fast hdd get a ssd but they could be too expensive.

The HDD is easily upgradable in most laptops and is one of the things I would consider last when buying a new machine. If it's the same machine and just a choice, then the 7200rpm drive.
