These are both 512MB DDR2 PC5300 SODIMM, but one of them has less memory chips (none on the back).

So apart from that, are they different in any other way? Performance or compatibility etc?

I say the only difference is the first one is 2rx16 and the other is 1rx16. not sure what that means though.

the hynix memory card has double the memory density than the promos memory card. This means that the memory is running more efficiently, since its a new higher density chip. This means higher memory bandwidth, and could also mean lower latencies.
If you are trying to decide which one to keep, keep the hynix, because it will perform better than the promos one will.
The performance difference will not be noticeable in real life, but it will be in synthetic benchmarks.

I thought all memory modules had chips on both sides.

Is this a new thing, that some brands only have chips on one side? If so, which brands are doing that?

If every memory make has memory modules with chips only on one side, how does one know, on ordering memory online, if the memory one is ordering is built that way or not?

And--if that's not good (as seems to be the case, reading this thread), to have the memory chips on only one side, why would anyone order that type, if they know what they are ordering?
