What is this Nvidia server GPU (rtx 2080 board ID) and why is there no core/die on the board?

Found a listing of a GPU with a board ID (PG150) similar to rtx2080 cards :

Curious if anyone knows why there is no chip on the board. I asked the seller and he said they are all like this, pulled from high end severs.

What are they used for if they have no chip?
And most importantly, if you install a chip on the board will you get a functional cheap rtx 2080?

No processor is going to be very low power!

That card is built for 384 bit memory, so it'd take no less than a 2080 ti core.

That card looks bizzare. Only thing I can think of is extra memory for other cards that do have a GPU.

 

it is not extra memory because each memory lanes are wired to the missing core, the only thing I can think of is that each core were mounted/only put on the card then maintain under pressure with a special mounting mechanism in order to work like in nvidia assembly to test each core before sending it to card maker.

actually there is 24 GDDR6 chip, if the card is sold at 100$, it is less than 5$ per chip which is a good price, it could also be used to fix dead card

 

Core was definitely desoldered. You can see solder residue on the pads. This was not a clamp type test board.

Those 69 cent alibaba listings don't even show the right picture, but description is right. I have a hard time seeing a legit seller having over 5000 TU102 cores. They would have dumped millions to Nvidia for that, but then didn't bother put up the right picture to sell them.

 

I have a hard time seeing these cards working even if they had a core added. You don't remove the core of a $3000+ GPU unless there is a problem.

I see, I expected more evidence like missing or deformed solder balls if they desoldered the chip, but maybe not...

If the core was removed, I wonder what they did with all these cores?
The whole thing is curious for me.

I think the quantity being wrong is standard for alibaba, as with the photo being wrong/generic. I think they are just trying to start the conversation/negotiation by listing something and would provide you more actual photos when they knew you were placing an order worth their time.

Shame I can't find any on aliexpress, which would mean I could just buy 1 unit.

I'm going to watch this listing and see if the starting price goes down after zero cards sell.
