It looks like that hard drive is in some sort of tray. That drive is a SATA drive, and it looks to have some sort of weird connector attached to the end. If you take the drive out of that enclosure, maybe you'll get to the sata connector?

Did you buy the drive as used? I guess somewhere the previous owner is now looking at his new bigger HDD and wondering how to fit it into his laptop... :D

If you are extremely nice person, contact the seller and ask if he needs the original tray before you throw it away. If he doesnt need it, find out what model the laptop was and sell it in the NBR Marketplace http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=18

Its a sata drive in some kind of cage, if you look on the drive at the left side above the date it specifies the drive type

take the drive out of the cage, then just replace it with any SATA 2.5" drive
the cage is nothing more than an adaptor to interface it with the motherboard

Definitely SATA but I've never seen a pinned connector like that. What does the female connector look like?

Its a SATA drive connected to Dells proprietary hard drive caddy and connector. eg like this

You can take the drive out, usually by screws.
