Just asking to get an idea what people prefer, I usually say Matte, since I do own a mirror![]()
-
Glossy all the way. Even on my desktop and my TV
I just want the highest possible contrast and vibrance. Reflections don't really bother me, as long as the backlight is bright enough. -
Glossy Woop Woop
-
Matte for me. I use matte on my pc but i'm stuck with glossy on my laptop
It's true that glossy has better contrast for colour but the mirror is so annoying. -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
I feel like this poll has been done and redone so many times now...
That being said, I still prefer matte. I've got a glossy screen on my desktop and there's definitely substantial glare and reflection from other stuff in my room. -
I prefer both I like both
Can I vote for both? -
How can you prefer both ?
-
Matte in all ways, no terribly reflections, more natural colors than glossy, more accurate colors- best for photo and video editing, especially in very high resolutions (WSXGA+ and WUXGA) more comfortable for overall work than glossy.
-
Glossy. I can't stand matte screens. The resulting picture looks dull and really bad.
-
Glossy looks okay, but sometimes vendors like HP will throa a super glossy fingerprint magnet of a screen out there. Uggh, they are so bad. Matte is definitely better if you work outside, glossy screens become mirrors

glossy. I used to hate it with a passion, but my new laptop's LED monitor basically eliminates all glare.
-
Super Matte. the inventor of the glossy screen was a woman for sure -.-
I really hate glossy... :\ and there's no way to get rid of the horrible reflections... grrrrrr -
Interesting that most prefer matte, when most laptops are glossy.
-
Yeah
all laptops lcd's screens are glossy ..
all LCD TV's screens are matte and pic is brilliant! -
glossy, i too think the matte makes the picture look bleh...... maybe the backlight has more to do with it though
-
And all plasmas have a nice glass front. 100% glossy! -
Glossy is cheaper to make I think. That's why it is all the rage.
-
Glossy makes a mediocre display look better, so manufacturers can use cheaper displays.
For example: Samsung used a high quality matte display on the NC10, now they are using lower quality displays with glossy coating on the N110. It probably allows them to keep the costs down. -

As far as matte vs. glossy, I too vote matte, though I would not pay a sizable premium to obtain a matte over glossy. -
Someone once told me that glossy screens are easier to recycle, don't know if it's true though, doesn't sound logical to me, I'd rather believe that glossy screens are easier to make look good when using low costs screen.
-
He probably meant LED backlit displays. LED displays are easier to recycle than CCFL displays.
-
They lappy in my sig unfortunately has a TrueLife Glossy WSXGA+. I wish they had a matte option but the only matte option was the 1280x800. That being said, I really dont think colors are more vibrant, brightness seems a little darker, and I have to adjust lights aroudn me so they arent behind the screen and create huge reflections. I prefer not to see my ugly face anyways
-
Many glossy LCDs come with anti-refletive coating, but it still reflects more than matte. The coating has a dark purplish tinge when looked at from the side similar to anti-glare coating on lenses and it is quite delicate. If you don't use a protective sheet when you carry around, expect permanent keyboard marks on the screen and they're far more conspicuous on glossy finish.
Use it in an office/a classroom and expect to see an image of fluorescent lamps reflecting in it.
in my opinion glossy produces more vibrant colors, but matte is much easier on my eyes.
HP markets(ed?) the glossy as an option as BrightView. My base model Pavilion came with a matte, but a non-working laptop Pavilion I bought so I can have a second power adapter and a second battery came with the BrightView. I tried it on and sure enough, the color was more vibrant, but the coating had significant amount of keyboard impressions.
Get the glossy if you want to be aware of who's walking behind you or have a good color rendition.
Get the matte if you don't like seeing yourself/objects, etc reflecting into the screen.
Although I'm not satisfied with the build quality and poor serviceability of my ze2000, in my opinion, the matte 15" XVGA LCD is excellent. -
I prefer glossy. A simple fix for glare: don't keep the source of light behind you.
In all seriousness, though, I like how glossy displays make everything seem more vibrant. Matte displays are nice for killing glare, but they also kill brightness and vividness. Not worth it for me. -
glossy FTW
-
Keep voting, this is interesting.....
-
Matte screens, but glossy is great as long as the back light can get extremely bright, so LED's all the way!
-

matte screens.....
glossy's just too reflective -
I hate glossy fingerprint magnets! grrr :| it's anoying. matte ftw
-
Slightly glossy is OK and my preffered screen - not too much - but so that the quality of the image is better.
My new Sony MP3 player is a mirror glossy screen - it does work in sunlight - but it isn't ideal, you have to find the right angle...
My slightly glossy Vaio LCD only needs brightness on max in sunlight and its perfectly readable.
My old matte screen was only useable without sunlight hitting it... -
Matte. I prefer accurate colors and detail over "vibrant" colors.
-
-
Glossy is great for games.
Glossy is great for office work too. Just keep direct (or reflected) light off them. -
yeah glossy is good for gaming but it all depends if you gonna have your laptop outside or inside most of the time inside i recommend glossy very bright and matte is more like an outdoor/indoor screen its all about user preference....
-
Having just switched to matte after 5 years of using glossy screens, I have to say I prefer matte screens hands down.
I travel and carry my notebook all over the place (lecture halls, seminars, etc.) and matte screens just work so much better in multiple lighting conditions than glossy. I don't have to crank up the brightness to the max just to see past my reflection which in turn saves battery life (see sig).
Also, newer matte screens are leagues better than older ones. If you're comparing a 2 year old matte screen with a new glossy, obviously there are going to be differences. -
GLOSSY FTW!
Brighter, crisper, better.
...Laptops arent meant to be used outside anyway. At least not for me.
For a TV though, Matte is way better. -
matte. One of the main reasons I bought a Latitude E6400. There's not many options left for those who can't stand glossy screens. It stinks. If I wanted to look at my reflection, I'd go get a hand mirror lol For a laptop, I'd prefer not to see myself.
Manufactures apparently think customers are just attracted to shiny objects lol -
-
Glossy is better for watching movies in which I depend on. I don't have TV. But I don't want a screen that is too reflective. Sony HiColor screen is better in this respect.
Matte screen may reduce the reflection but it disperses the light which makes the color looks dull and makes poor contrast ratio. Matte screen is horrible for watching movies. -
Hmm, glossy may look better for movies, but what's the primary use of your laptop? For me, which is surfing around the net and some work, matte is the best choice, but I guess it depends on what you use it for.
-
Glossy, i've recently used a samsung r700 (17incher) outside in the sun and this was basically the first glossy screen i've seen absorb the sun with a slight dimness without the lights on
I could actually SEE THE SCREEEN! lol -
It's strange that most people prefer matte screens, when most notebooks are glossy.
Oh well...keep voting, thanks. -
Glossy is the only way to go for screens. I use mine outside and rarely is there a problem. Even then I don't think matte would make the glare go away, just diffuse it.
On the rest of the laptop however, I hate glossy. -
My old laptops matte screen vs. my Vaios glossy screen, then glossy please
But some laptops have screens that a are mirrors... and these are horrible -
I'd choose semi-gloss. Matte is good because there are no reflections. Gloss is easy to clean and less likely to develop a scratch comparing with matte.
-
What is semi-gloss?
What kind of screen do you prefer ? Matte or glossy
