I have a dell E6500 (P8400 and quadro nvs 160m) with 2gb ddr2 800 in 1dimm. I use the laptop for the basics and graphic design. What memory should I get for the second slot? DDR2 667? DDR2 800? DDR3? 1GB? 2GB? Will I see any differnce between them? are the price differnces between them worth it?

DDR3 is incompatible. Get DDR2-800. It costs nearly the same as DDR2-667.

If you install DDR2-667, the first module will also get downclocked to DDR2-667, though there is really no noticeable performance difference b/w DDR2-800 and DDR2-667.

Your laptop will only work with DDR2 memory. You may get away with just buying the 1 GB. The vast majority of users will be fine with 2 or 3GB. If your motherboard supports dual channel memory then maybe you'd be better off with another 2GB stick, but Intel CPU's are pretty good with "asymetrical" dual channel pairings of RAM.

Are you using XP or Vista? 32 bit or 64 bit?

    Either PC2-5300 or PC2-6400. 200-pin.

    Whichever is cheaper. ;)
