Probably going to get an XPS1330 for my sister as a graduation gift and just wondering what processor to get. She's not going to ever use it for gaming or any thing that resource heavy. She'll just use it to browse Internet and write papers for grad school. Here are the upgrade choices:
Intel® Core 2 Duo T6400 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache) [Included in Price]
Intel® Core 2 Duo T6600 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache) [add $50 or $1/month1]
Intel® Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1GHz/800Mhz FSB/3MB cache) [add $125 or $4/month1]
Intel® Core 2 Duo T8300 (2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/3MB cache) [add $175 or $5/month1]
Intel® Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz/800Mhz FSB/6MB cache) [add $300 or $9/month1]
Intel® Core 2 Duo T9500 (2.6GHz/800Mhz FSB/6MB cache) [add $575 or $17/month1]
I really don't want to go past adding $125 unless there will be a noticeable increase in speed. thoughts?

Unless she's going to be gaming or doing hardcore video editing or audio processing, the T6400 should be just fine.
-
stock is fine
-
she's not going to do anything relatively in that nature. so it's not even worth the $50 upgrade to a T6600? and one more thing should i get 3gb of ram or 4gb? the upgrade is only $35 more. and one more thing i jus came across. Should i be safe and get the wireless n card for $25 more? the wireless g is stock but i wouldn't want here to run into a n network and not be able to use it but do you guys even think she'll find any n networks in college?
-
sleepy ur sig is against the rules
-
it would be cheaper to upgrade the ram and wifi ur self but in this case since its a gift and will make it easier get the 4 gigs of ram and the wifi
-
Yep, the T6400 should be perfectly fine.
-
sorry changed sig... alright so i'll get the ram upgrade if you guys think it'll speed it up and one question about the wifi card. is there a difference between the two cards besides the ten dollars?
Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-card [Included in Price]
Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card [add $10] -
help if i knew what brand the dell wifi card is
id say get the intel i know intel wifi cards are very good
and im not sure about the dell
its only 10 bucks lol -
alright i'll get the T6400 processor, upgrade the ram to 4gb, and get the intel wireless n card... thanks for help
-
Yeah, for only 10 bucks, get the Intel.
Ive used a laptop with a dell card in it before, and it is very annoying IMO.
But Intel is a good reputable brand, just get thiers anyway.
Edit: ^^^ Yep, that sounds good. -
One more thing i jus came across for my sister's computer... should i get 64 bit windows or 32 bit windows? I've heard that 64 bit has some problems with certain drivers for printers and stuff like that and if my sisters comes across these problems at grad school she's not going to have any clue how to fix it. so i'm willing to have a little drop in performance if it means that she'll not run into problems like this. also if i do get the 32 bit would it make any sense to upgrade to 4gb? cause i've heard that 32 bit can only utilize 3 gb.
-
yea if you get 32 bit youw ill only be able to use 3.2 gigs of ram
and sometimes companys dont make 64 bit drivers..... i would say stick with 32 bit for her ... just to make is easier -
Don't get 4GB of ram then... stick with 2GB imo.
-
no dont get 2 gigs get 3
trust the Moo -
lol. I use my laptop for far more uses than her and I don't exceed 2GB of ram. Of course, she might download a lot of things that might run at start-up or similar, enough to fill up that ram (my sister starts up at like 1.5GB, me at 900MB.)
But honestly, i'm still saying 2GB is enough. -
well she is a novice and wont know about start up and disableing stuff.
She will proably not excede it but still good to have. BTW i use 2 gigs and i know it works im just saying for a novice -
IMO, 2GB is sufficient for most people. But 3GB will give you a little performace increase. -
...... i guess it will but im cheap
-
alright i'll jus get the 32bit and 3 gigs comes standard
What processer for an XPS?
