I have a unique situation. I bought this computer here off of amazon and it came defective:
Amazon.com: Lenovo G560 Series 0679ALU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black): Computer & Accessories
When I went to the website for support, I was sent in this direction for the support guide:
http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/uk/en/UserGuide/Guide_show_1273732195154.html
(my thread is in the value line section for G series computers)
So, I open the PDF file and compare it with what I bought. I have THIS processor:
Intel® Pentium® Processor P6200 (3M Cache, 2.13 GHz)
From the stats, looks like the fastest possible compatable processor is this one: Intel® Core? i7-640M Processor (4M Cache, 2.80 GHz)
I know it is a little expensive but you all think I would notice a difference in speed? What would make the most difference speed wise: Extra RAM, a faster processor? or more cache speed? is one more M that much?
I am open to all thoughts. Thanks to this website, i got to mod an old 400 buck ACER and had fun doing it and now I am considering doing it if my new laptop screen fixes my current issue. Oh, and since the seller gane me a full refund, I can kinda do this now. What would you all do?

Yeah, you will easily notice the speed difference.
Pair up the i7 with 8GB RAM and you'll be flying for a few years.
Good luck. -
I think it has this:
2 × 2GB (DDR3 1066MHz)
If i bought 2 of the 4GB versions, I wonder what it would cost and if it would work...hmm. I will read those links. -
I think this is mine:
PassMark CPU Lookup
(looking at my lenovo G560 hardware maint. laptop manual)
The one you posted scored almost 800 points more than mine.
Is there a link that says what that score means? Is there a way to put it that makes a little more sence? Just wondering. Thanks!!!
EDIT: I found some info that somewhat explains it. Higher is better i guess....
1950 versis 2750 is supposedly a big difference. -
Found it!

65 bucks for the set!
Thanks!
Also this is $357

so, basicly for 410 bucks I can make my laptop sing. Now, if only the wife will let me. -

If she doesn't, just tell her you'll be lining up to buy one that 'just works' (cost: ~$2K, look on her face: priceless.

Seriously, that cpu is very expensive - couldn't you simply sell what you have and buy (for real) a better system 'off the shelf'?
Even if it's the same money, it will be a better use of it, overall? -

Yea, seriously?
You should just get an ES or QS i7-620m for like 100-200$ -
Well, I was hoping for a processor that costs no more than 250 bucks that would be a significant upgrade. I went ahead and bought the RAM (8GB) for 65 bucks. That may end up being all I do. I may have to shop around to see if there is a cheap but way better processor out there. That one I found is 100 bucks from costing what the laptop did. That is a little much!
Wow, Apple charges an arm and a leg. Screw that! Lenovo has every single replacement part you need for sale and a full diagram showing you how to take the thing apart. Moding this one will be more fun! I will keep looking. -

Hehe see my post ^
If nothing else you can probably get an i5-450m for ~100$ -
Please explain what an ES and QS is and what would be the best place to buy either/both? A quick ebay search brought up some shady sellers. Maybe that is part of the game i guess?
Edit: I think I have figured this out. I would have NEVER thought of this. The price difference is crazy. I assume there is a reason why. -
niffcreature ex computer dyke
There isn't a reason why. Except that people like you think there is a reason why.
There may be a select few that don't have temp sensors, if the seller says its in working condition however, you would be able to return it in that case no questions asked.
They all claim that they work exactly the same as OEM. So, if you can prove them wrong, more power to you.
BTW they aren't shady. Under 75% is shady. Come on. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Yeah, reason: not anyone's to sell (they remain property of Intel indefinitely).
See:

By shady, I meant that alot of the spelling and grammar was off, until I realized that this guy is probably foreign. So, I looked around and found THIS:
NEW Intel Core i7 620M ES 2.4G NOT 2.66G surpass i5-540 | eBay
This seems like a good buy based on stats, and the chip is very compatable and even overclockable (not that I know how to do that, but I am sure it isnt too hard.)
I may try it. Nothing to lose, but I was sceptical as always. I don't plan to try and prove anyone wrong, and they have a good track record, but ES/QS stuff is something I am new to.
Thanks for the link, tiller, that is something I will take into consideration. -

Here's what Intel themselves say about ES/QS cpu's:

Thanks for informative link. Maybe if the things wernt so damn expensive there would not even be a market for them. I am not against paying for something I want, but the price differences can be quite a bit. After reading through the whole thread you linked me too, I noticed some of those people didnt have much luck either. I guess it is a leap you have to make. At least if I bought an official copy, if it blew up i could legaly blame intel and I would have a case. With this other option, you are taking a gamble. I am not sure what I will do, but at least I like knowing I have many options if I choose to do this. I do know one thing, I would never try this in a very expensive laptop or desktop! Too much of an investment!

You're welcome and glad I could give you the 'other side' of the argument.
While the price (discount) is tempting, the fact that you'd be encouraging (illegally) people to make a 100% profit on something they get free (I'm assuming...) is not something that I could support myself.
I have not seen an instance where getting what you pay for is not as exemplified as it is here. (Giving real and good money for a product that is not even allowed to be sold - even by the company that made it). -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
I would check in the IdeaPad forum because I believe someone tried to install a Core i5 into a G560 and it did not POST. IdeaPad may whitelist CPU's in the BIOS, as Lenovo already whitelists WLAN cards.
What processor is best for Lenovo G560?
