The fan in my HP 8710w comes on when the GPU (Quadro 1600m) hits 55C, it runs ata higher speed when it hits 60C.

Cant GPUs run perfectly fine at 80-90 C ?

while the gpu might be fine at 80-90c the surrounding components might not be, their is a thread about whether extended gaming will reduce a notebooks life.

    Cooler is always better.

For long periods of time i wouldnt run them anymore than 85c.

75c or lower would be the ideal max temps.

Anything over 100 is critical which will drastically affect the gpu's life.

anything below 80C would be allright... but that's at full load... idle should be 40-50s for NVDIA GPU.... but some ppl will say 100C under load is nothing... like those with Asus G50 and G51s....and maybe the old M15x...

Both of my GPUs actually run cooler than my CPU. My CPU can touch 80 on a heavy stress, but my GPUs barely touch 75. I wouldn't consider these temps bad at all. I'd worry if anything approached 90c.

Same here... My video card isn't anything near as powerful as the GT260's and 280's but it does idle at 34-36c and under full load it runs about 55-60c. 61c is actually the hottest I've ever seen it, which I love, seeing as how my little mbp gets hot as hell when under stress.

When mine gets above the low 90s I start to get errors in some games. (NVidia 9800M GS)

the ONLY way to answer this question is to look up the spec sheets for the GPU and ID the operating temps.

    All else is speculation.

I had an old PowerBook G4, and that thing got hot as hell under load, but it was only an illusion. To a processor, 65c isn't that hot. When that heat is transmitted to a metal case and then to your skin, it feels a lot hotter than it is.

That said, even with my (relatively) low GPU temps, I can still heat most of this side of my apartment with all the heat this thing kicks out, even though the case rarely feels more than warm (it is aluminum / magnesium, but the cooling is designed to keep the keyboard / palmrests cool).

lol.. I had to download smcFANCONTROL for my mac, and I set it to constantly hover at about 4k/rpm. When I'm not running the fan control software, it routinely gets to 80c when under stress... which bothers me, but I've had it swapped out for a new one and both units act identical... so I guess it's just how the heat exchange on that model was designed. They went for quiet and hot instead of cool and audible fan noise.

Are you referring to me? I've overclocked the hell out of my Q9000, and it's cool enough for my tastes. If I did anything to the voltage I'd ADD another .05V to try and make over 2.5 GHz.

But then, I'm a little insane these days.

I said I like to OC, not that I'm made of money :p

I'm so broke after buying this thing it isn't even funny. But it's in the plans for the future, trust on that!

Exactly. I'm a gnat's arse away from the stock clock of a QX9300, and that seems pretty good to me.

Ineed, my gpy used to run 92 celcius easily, but after doing so for a while...i started getting black outs and rainbow sparks. This is typical of the nvidia 8 series.
I need to stay around 75 celcius now because my card can't take it anymore.

I use the BIOS. I can choose memory and FSB speeds independant of one another. One reason I went with the Alienware. There's a whole tab in the BIOS called 'OVERCLOCKING' and it makes me grin like a lunatic whenever I see it. :D
