    - Remove all the bullcrap software that Asus gives you with it (even though Asus isn't that bad at installing BS on their comps)
    - Update ALL drivers (Don't use Windows update, go to the hardware producers website and get them fresh off the press.)
    - Windows Update (All new updates)

    That's about it!

    Make sure to put a good Distributed Computing project on your brand new super-computer laptop, like seti@Home, einstein@home or Folding@home. Make sure it'll take advantage of both the CPU cores and your GPU when your not using it ;)

    Do what inzelux said.

    You should also remember to get a good anti-virus like Microsoft Security Essentials and a malware-remover like Malwarebytes (they are both free).

    Fare well on the internet!

    I also recommend using msconfig to get rid of any annoying startup programs you may have running.

    I would run Fumark FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net
    and if you want an opinion on the results post a new thread here:
    ASUS Gaming Notebook Forum
    Ickibar123 If your suggestion was not sarcastic, I disagree. Why would one want to waste electric, and wear out their excellent gaming machine? :eek:

    It wasn't sarcastic. Why would it be a waste of electricity (those projects are useful) and why do you think it would wear out a laptop? I've been running a project on my CPU for years and on my GPU for at least a year now, no problems. If your laptop keeps the components cool, no problem (unless you keep it heavily overclocked all the time, then you have to worry about voltage regulators and caps).

    I do agree that we should do some folding when we get the chance. It helps move research further and yep. :D

    Is there a set of things to check for as soon as you receive a new laptop? I just got a new asus g53sx and I had to RMA it because the screen wouldnt turn on while everything else would (hdd, etc). I would like to know what to check before installing an SSD in case I have to RMA it again once I get it back. Thanks! :)

    Why uninstall all the Asus stuff? Some of it is actually cool, like the facial recognition software.

    What I do on a new laptop or when bringing an old one "back to life":

    Wipe everything, format the drives and install the OS from scratch;
    Install all OS updates;
    Find the latest drivers for your hardware and install them;
    Install all the programs you need and use msconfig to remove auto startup for those you don't need (most of them, usually);
    Undervolt and overclock the processor and video card if possible;

    The laptop is now ready to work at its top potential! :)

    Yes anyone who doesn't know why they bought a new laptop really is a dummy.

    As far as running smoother I always check the temps, then disassemble it completely to do a repaste.

    And throw away the modem. ;)
